KUALA LUMPUR: National hydrocarbon custodian, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), will continue to undertake aggresive exploration and appraisal activities despite the low oil price environment. General manager (Malaysia petroleum management) Mohd Redhani Abdul Rahman said Petronas felt that this was one of the main strategic thrusts that has been working for Malaysia for the past five to 10 years. “In the last five years, there have been 970 exploration wells drilled in South-East Asia and about one fifth of them, or 171 wells, drilled in Malaysian waters.

Why do organisations place so much trust in external data whose history they have little knowledge of? Richard Lee writes With the UK’s leading data summit, Data Leadership, returning on 26 November, it struck me after reviewing the agenda that we have now reached a point where there are many discrete and different forms of data being used across most enterprises on a regular basis. Much of this data now comes from outside the organisation – sources like open data, reference data and social media data – and is managed to varying SLAs and best practices with respect to quality, veracity and latency. This makes them extremely suspect at times, in my opinion.

The open data scene has increased significantly in most Latin American countries. Open data advocates from technology groups and civil society are continuously pushing the agenda with governments and also generating publicly available data on their own since 2011. In 2014, a regional open data research initiative, ILDA, was launched to promote and assess the impact and evolution of open data in the region. And, in the past year some governments have launched open data portals and started opening national and local programs. Despite the fact that the open data scene involves mostly civil society advocates and governments, specific efforts have been made to include key stakeholders, such as journalists.

Transport for London (TfL) has launched a new transparency strategy, through which it intends to provide better access to information and more clarity around the release of key data. Earlier this year, TfL carried out a public consultation with customers and stakeholders about how it could increase public access to the information it holds. As a result of the consultation, TfL received 93 responses from a range of stakeholders, with suggestions about information they would want the organisation to release. “For many years we have published a huge amount of information and data, and this strategy is the next step in going even further.” Among the most prominent transparency decisions made, is the online publishing of of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests from next year.

City of Jackson leaders want Jackson residents to go online and fill out the city’s new “Open Data Survey.” The survey includes eleven questions ranging from, “Do you feel as though information about the city’s progress is communicated effectively?” to “What kinds of information you’d like to receive from the city?” The information from the survey will help Jackson leaders move forward with the new open data initiative. The initiative is expected to help the city become more transparent and data driven. The goal is for Jackson constituents to become more informed about what’s going on in the Capitol City. ATLANTA – As a part of the Atlanta Police Department’s commitment to President Barack Obama’s 21st Century Police Initiatives, we have launched our open crime data portal. This searchable database will provide easy access to the most commonly requested Part 1 crime statistics. As new datasets become available, they will be added to the portal. “We are certain this will add another layer of transparency that already exists between the Atlanta Police Department and our community,” said Chief George Turner. “It is important that we provide our citizens with accurate and timely information whenever possible. Currently, data is available for the present day, the last 24 hours and beyond.

In 2013, the city of Tulsa created its Open Tulsa website, which now has 35 datasets published. The number of datasets, compared to cities who have released 10 times the amount, doesn’t adequately reflect the level of commitment by the city; it illustrates the lack of support and advocacy from stakeholders to demand more. Open Tulsa has a link for anyone to request a dataset be published, and in two years of operation, the city has received zero inquiries or requests. Additionally, we’ve had very little interest from the local news media in response to our news pitches and releases about open data. As a result, we believe we are addressing the local needs, but we want to do more as an organization to build upon our transparency and civic engagement efforts.

MSU entomologist Christie Bahlai selected as an inaugural Mozilla Fellows for Science MSU advanced its influence in the growing area of open science with the announcement of Christie Bahlai being selected as one of the first Mozilla Fellows for Science. The four fellows selected represent a change in the process of scientific research, championing openness, collaboration and mentorship. More than 130 researchers applied for the 10-month paid fellowships that will engage local communities to advance open data and open source software, and teach colleagues skills to do the same. Mozilla will support the fellows with training aimed at sharpening their expertise around open source, participatory learning and data sharing.
