The House of Representatives yesterday passed a bill that could see vast troves of de-identified data on Australia’s welfare recipients released to the public. After a number of unsuccessful attempts, the lower house finally ushered through the government’s autumn red-tape reduction omnibus, designed to strip redundant legislation and unnecessary bureaucracy out of Australia’s laws. Should it clear the Senate, schedule five of the omnibus bill will change welfare legislation in a way that allow for the release of “de-identified, aggregated data” for the purpose of policy, research and public transparency. The data due to be released is collected under the acts governing family tax benefits, paid parental leave, social security and student allowances.

When the PML-N was campaigning for elections 2013, it promised that the constitutional right of the people of Pakistan to have access to information will be provided. The party’s manifesto said: right to information law based on international best practices shall be passed to give every citizen the right to know and to build institutional mechanism to increase access to information. The government’s Vision 2025 also promises an open government. Yet to this date, that promise remains unfulfilled, despite the fact that a draft federal Right to Information (RTI) law has been catching dust for more than a year, whereas the passing of RTI in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a living testament to the fact that the passing of RTI is not as time taking as say energy reforms.

Last month I was fortunate enough to attend the African Open Data Conference as a Fellow for the School of Data, a global network of trainers, who provide data literacy skills training to public sector, non profit organisations, civil society organisations and data journalists to better understanding the data processing pipeline. There is a wealth of open source tools for the scraping, cleaning and verification, and visualisation of data if one is only aware of them and how to use them. In particular, African countries experience a shortage of practical skills, and yet, are climbing aboard the open data movement, which promotes the provision of open source data for advocacy, and citizen participation.

This is a call to action to assist the GODAN partnership in identifying and filling critical data gaps in agriculture and nutrition required to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2:  End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also called Global Goals, are an inter-governmentally agreed set of measurable targets relating to international development and must be achieved by 2030. They succeed the Millennium Development Goals once those expire at the end of 2015. SDG2 sets the goal of ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture by 2030.

LAS VEGAS – As daily fantasy sports operators FanDuel and DraftKings hustle to prove they can be trusted by thousands of users each week, cheating allegations have served as a backdrop for lingering questions about an industry that has been unregulated. Officials for the companies repeated Wednesday that a DraftKings employee who won $350,000 in a FanDuel contest did nothing wrong, and did not have access to internal data before his entry into the contest was complete. But as the companies operate now, it’s up to users of the sites to take their word for it. DraftKings CEO Jason Robins said Wednesday the company is committed to creating an open and transparent environment.

Within the Comsode project Spinque applied its Search by Strategy approach to Open Data. We successfully extended the approach to Linked Open Data and we demonstrated the technology through several search applications. At the end of the project we are very pleased with the result and we are grateful that we got the chance to help the Open Data community a bit forward within the Comsode project. We still wanted to do one more thing; during the project an additional request for search functionality came up. Can we use Spinque to find datasets? Although not anticipated in the project proposal we wanted to support this. Spinque’s Search by Strategy approach is, however, not the best match for this purpose. This type of search functionality asks for Spinque PSSA.
