As the official mapping agency of Great Britain, the Ordnance Survey (OS) is no stranger to creating easy-to-use, geometrically-accurate representations of terrain, but its latest efforts are truly out of this world. As BBC News and the Daily Mail reported on Monday, OS cartographer Chris Wesson reviewed open data originally published by NASA and used it to create a terrain map of Mars. One copy of the map was printed and given to British scientist Dr. Peter Grindrod as he helps plan the landing of the European ExoMars rover in 2019. In addition, the map of the Red Planet, which covers roughly 10 million square kilometers (3.8 million square miles, or about seven percent of its terrain).

Shortly after taking office, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti made it clear he wanted street projects to be better coordinated and timed. “No more Bureau of Street Services paving a street on Monday, [Department of Water and Power] digging it up on Tuesday,” he said. Now the city has a tool to make sure that doesn’t happen. City employees can go online and see whether the road they want to repave is already scheduled to be torn up soon for some other reason, like replacing a sewer pipe. If it is, they can hold off. Residents can also see the same information, so they know, for instance, how long their street will be under construction. The new tool is called Street Wize, and it’s only the tip of the iceberg for what L.A.

The British mapping agency Ordnance Survey has created an easy-to-read map of Mars’ surface using Nasa open data. The map – posted to Flickr on Friday – covers 3.8m sq miles or approximately 7% of the red planet’s surface. It was produced to a scale of one to 4m. The landing sites of past rovers are featured on the map, including the Mars Pathfinder in north-west Ares Vallis and the Opportunity rover, east of Margaritifer Terra. Cartographic designer Chris Wesson “designed the map over a couple of months”, according to the Ordnance Survey blog. It is the first landscape the agency has mapped from another planet. “It was a little hard at first to actually understand the data itself in terms of things like the elevation and the scale and so on,” Wesson told BBC.

New research suggests smart cities will combine human effort with excellence in technology to create better places to live — and it’s all predicated on the successful use of open data. According to Lux Research, “Smart cities seek environmental sustainability, economic prosperity and convenient, livable spaces” through the use of technologies from big data and analytics vendors like IBM, SAP and Oracle. But Alex Herceg, Lux Research analyst and lead author of the report wrote, said the real key is open data. “Open data is allowing entrepreneurs to develop apps for the city so it is opening cities up. We are at an interesting point of disruption right now,” he told CMSWire.

The White House has released the President’s budget and for the first time it’s in an open data format. This means that citizens can explore an interactive, visual budget online and the raw data can be downloaded and used by anybody who wants to explore how the US spends its money. This gives Americans unprecedented access to the ways their tax dollars are spent and makes it easy for people without degrees in accounting and economics to get a grip on the federal budget. As NMID has reported, several states have been using data visualization software to make their budget documents more user-friendly, but New Mexico is not one of them.

Secret Lab, or more specifically, Paris Buttfield-Addison and Jon Manning, introduced themselves at Linux.conf.au 2016 during their talk Open Data + Video Games = Win: “We write books and have made games for iconic Australia brands.” [Watch a video of the talk] Which is accurate. They also sometimes do things like make Pokemon-style games based on the Energy Star data for washing machines. But let’s back up for a minute and talk about why they’d do such a thing. Hackathons have become a fashionable way to generate a lot of code. (Code that, in many cases, nobody ever looks at again.) Companies like to run them as an inexpensive method of R&D (research and design). Entire consultancies are built around running them for this purpose.

Brand owners need to use ‘predictive analysis’ of business data to help prevent them being the victims of food fraud, experts have argued. These days there are huge amounts of ‘big data’ within people’s possession – from their own supply chains to chatter on social media such as Twitter – but the trick is to filter it in such a way that it provides useful information that can be acted upon, said Professor Guy Poppy, chief scientific advisor to the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Poppy was speaking at a conference on ‘The Future of the Food Industry’ organised by food safety company NSF International at the London offices of legal firm DWF last Thursday (February 11).

One of the great problems with governments and open data is trying to find one tree in a forest — and then trying to find out what that tree means. You can, for example, dig into this province’s open data and find the top 100 baby names for 2014 (For boys, the top five are, in descending order, Jackson, Liam, Jack, Benjamin and Jacob. For girls? Olivia, Emma, Lily, Ava and Avery.) You can find the forecasts for the precipitous fall in mining industry employment in the province (11,234 in 2013, 7,444 in 2014, to an estimated 6,654 last year that will probably turn out to be a hopeful number). And you can look at future labour tables and see that, if you really want a job in the future, you should look at nursing or home care. Construction trades? Not so much.
