It can be hard to hail a cab in Singapore when you need it the most. Taxis seem to disappear during the frequent tropical showers, and this was proven when MIT researchers compared rainfall data with taxi locations: drivers are less likely to pick up passengers for fear of having an accident. Transport data can reveal plenty about people’s behaviour and preferences. Which is why this week GovInsider explores how Singapore’s open data on taxis can be used. The data, published by the city’s Land Transport Authority, shows how many taxis are available for hire and where they are located. The best part is that the data is in real-time. It can be used with an Application Programming Interface (API) – a tool that lets apps directly access the data.

A series of ‘meetups’ on the subject of open data are to be held in the North East, as the region strives to be recognised as a global leader in the field. Kicking off on Wednesday (17th) at Campus North in Newcastle, the monthly events are being organised by the Federation of Small Businesses, working in partnership with James Rutherford of Creative Nucleus, and are aimed at everyone interested in the subject. Those attending will hear from individuals and organisations that have already used open data. Advice will be offered on practical ways of doing so and a drive will be launched for the datasets the community would like to see opened up by councils and others.

One week ago, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ruled in favor of net neutrality, or equal access to all Web content, when it banned free mobile data programs that favor some websites over others. The decision, brought about in part as a reaction to the Free Basics service from Facebook, effectively shuts down the program. It remains to be seen whether zero rating services like Free Basics, which do not charge customers for data on a limited range of apps or sites, might provide the pathways to affordable and fully open Internet access for all. But the decision was a blow to Facebook’s efforts in India, and as the company identifies next steps, it must consider other ways to connect the unconnected in a country that is home to a quarter of the world’s offline population.

In 2016, transit data is important to any urban city. Without access to this information, people are left to guess how long it will take to get from point A to point B, the norm just a few decades ago, but a luxury that most nowadays are unwilling to live without. It took many years to translate transit data into a universally usable format for wider audiences and platforms. In 2005, General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) was created, giving a common standard for data which enabled transit data to be universally understood. Google and other companies could now use this transit data to accurately estimate travel times and enable people around the globe to plan their trips more efficiently via their software.

NIU students, DeKalb community members, civic leaders, computer coders, and tech enthusiasts will come together Saturday, March 5, in Founders Memorial Library for the first CodeAcross DeKalb, a free, day-long event exploring how public data can be harnessed for public good. The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a quick introduction to the idea of “civic hacking,” the practice of writing programs that access publicly available data – on anything from health and crime to infrastructure and economic development – and try to make it more accessible and useful for citizens, nonprofits and government. “The data is out there,” said Tracy Rogers-Tryba, a research associate at NIU’s Center for P-20 Engagement, the event’s host.

One of the problems with much of science is that it’s often a quasi-sedentary profession. Apart from those lucky few who have to trek through muddy fields in Vietnam or scale icy cliffs in Antarctica, the rest of us mostly took the job because it was indoors and required no heavy lifting. That said, scientists get a lot of exercise. Usually, this involves energetically jumping to conclusions—there is nothing quite like seeing two data points, fitting a straight line and yelling, “We understand this COMPLETELY.” The newest craze among the more energetic set is aquatic: shark jumping. Science is undergoing a cultural change at the moment, thanks to the Open Science movement, an idea that I am broadly supportive of.

On January 27, 2016, the City of Orlando launched the first event of its kind and assembled a multi-stakeholder community of interest to examine the data associated with a thorny social epidemic: Violence Against Women. In May 2015, the White House launched a progressive program designed to engender trust between the police agencies across the country and the citizens they serve. The program called, “The Police Data Initiative (PDI)” was the brainchild of two (then) White House Innovation Fellows, Denice Ross and Clarence Wardell III who, at the time, worked alongside a few dozen other brainiac citizen geeks and 21st century open data philosophers to bring about systemic change that benefits the American citizen.

Missions to Mars may be fraught with challenges, making sure you have enough oxygen, water, fuel, and potatoes – in the case of The Martian’s Mark Watney – but a map of where you’re going needn’t be one of them. A new detailed map of the red planet has been produced by Ordnance Survey, giving would-be astronauts one less excuse to get lost if they ever reach the red planet. The one-off map is based on open data of the Martian surface captured by Nasa and has been produced both as a digital map and a paper map. It is similar to those used by hikers all over the British Isles to get their bearings, although users will struggle to find the typical church steeples, roads or streams – of liquid water anyway.

Knowledge Engine by Wikipedia will democratize the discovery of media, news and information – it will make the Internet’s most relevant information more accessible and openly curated, and it will create an open data engine that’s completely free of commercial interests. Today, commercial search engines dominate search-engine use of the Internet, and they’re employing proprietary technologies to consolidate channels of access to the Internet’s knowledge and information. Their algorithms obscure the way the Internet’s information is collected and displayed.
