Open data can make us knowledgable about the daily lives of every city citizen and their impact on their surroundings. This data can give us detailled information on topics like air pollution, food distribution and environmental impact. These are only a few of the examples of how open data can be helpful. The presentations and following discussion have taught us a couple of important lessons on the use of data. I will explain them below: Although open data can provide us with many data sets that help us to improve our daily lives, we have to be aware that the available data is made by someone. Ivonne Jansen-Dings from Waag Society rightly pointed this out during her presentation: ‘technology is not neutral’.

With the help of NASA open data, the British mapping agency Ordnance Survey has designed a new digital map that provides an impressive view of the Mars landscape. The agency has surveyed part of the red planet’s surface to develop the 2,282-by-1,691-mile Mars map, which has been produced at a scale of 1 to 4 million. The map is part of the agency’s effort to evaluate potential use of its mapping expertise for future Mars mission. Ordnance Survey Director of Products David Henderson said, “Becoming more familiar with space is something that interests us all and the opportunity to apply our innovative cartography and mapping tradecraft to a different planet was something we couldn’t resist”.

NEW YORK, Feb. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Crisis Text Line, a not-for-profit organization, announced they will be making their data available to approved researchers, who must meet stringent requirements, including that research will help more people in crisis. Currently, the largest open dataset on mental health and crisis is a survey run every other year by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Over 13 million text messages have been exchanged via Crisis Text Line since its launch in August 2013, qualifying this as the nation’s largest open set of crisis data.

It offers performance improvements of more than 100x on analytical workloads, the foundation says Hadoop, Spark and Kafka have already had a defining influence on the world of big data, and now there’s yet another Apache project with the potential to shape the landscape even further: Apache Arrow. The Apache Software Foundation on Wednesday launched Arrow as a top-level project designed to provide a high-performance data layer for columnar in-memory analytics across disparate systems. Based on code from the related Apache Drill project, Apache Arrow can bring benefits including performance improvements of more than 100x on analytical workloads, the foundation said. In general, it enables multi-system workloads by eliminating cross-system communication overhead.

The Ordnance Survey has officially gone off-world. The British mapping agency has released a Mars map, created with the help of NASA open data. Like Us on Facebook This is the first time that Ordnance has created a map of another planet. The map itself covers about 3.8 million square miles, or about 7 percent of the total Martian surface, and could potentially be used in the future when exploring Mars. OS used a soft color palette when creating a map and includes contours and grid lines. The map even has a legend in order to see the scale. “It was a little hard at first to actually understand the data itself in terms of things like the elevation and the scale and so on,” said Chris Wesson, the OS cartographer who created the map, in an interview with BBC News.
