Canadian data centers are increasingly alluring to North American data center customers because of lower power costs and data privacy protection. However, data center pros should carefully consider whether sending their business north of the border makes sense. Canada’s countrywide data center market is equal in size to the largest market in the U.S. — northern Virginia — meaning reduced competition and potentially higher prices. Some companies are attracted by increased privacy protections available with data residing outside of the United States. The six chartered banks in Canada, for example, won’t put data in the U.S. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure have announced new data centers in Canada because of privacy laws and concerns about surveillance in the U.S.

The lead poisoning of the entire city of Flint, Michigan was preventable and should never have happened. Numerous pundits and industry experts have said this. Most of them, however, explain that if government had functioned properly, the environmental agencies would have properly communicated to their higher-ups and the problem would have been spotted much sooner. Those with a more cynical view intone that the government in Ann Arbor was not terribly interested in the plight of the largely poor residents of long-beleaguered Flint, a casualty of the Rust Belt Collapse. I think these experts have it wrong. Open data can help us, the people of the United States, prevent the next Flint.

In line with the launch of its official site, the EDP is gathering stories and economic insights to bring to public bodies who could benefit more from open data The official first version of the European Data Portal (EDP) is launched today, with a mission to improve accessibility and increase the value of open data. The EDP harvests the metadata of public sector information available on public data portals across European countries. These portals are national-, regional-, local- or domain-specific, and span across 28 EU Member States, the European Economic Area, countries involved in the EU’s neighbourhood policy and Switzerland. The portal now hosts over 400,000 datasets – almost double the amount it had at the point of its beta launch in November 2015.

E-signatures can be used to convey patient consent to the sharing of their medical information with insurers by doctors, and avoid a more drawn up process for obtaining that consent which arises where physical consent documents are involved, the ABI said. “E-signatures can both secure and speed up the process by allowing the consent to be sent instantly and electronically to the GP, thus cutting out several days from the process,” the ABI said.

Data from California’s public agencies will soon be housed under one roof, as part of a statewide push for accountability and transparency. Officials from California Government Operations Agency, more commonly known as CalGovOps, announced last week plans to launch an open data portal to aggregate and publish all of California’s public agency data together to increase access to public information available about infrastructure, public health, health care, human services and other subjects. Stuart Drown, deputy secretary of innovation and accountability for CalGovOps, said the initiative began in 2015 when CalGovOps launched an experimental portal, which had 11 data sets from three different departments. The prototype can be found at greengov.data.ca.
