A whole lot of valuable information is trapped in the antiquated databases and inaccessible filing systems of local governments across the country. Now, the Obama administration is hoping to unlock that treasure chest with the launch of The Opportunity Project, a new open data project spearheaded by the White House. The goal of The Opportunity Project is to make local and federal datasets easily sortable and available online, so developers can combine them to build new civic tech tools to improve the relationship between cities and their citizens. The site, which launched today, features data on everything from crime to after-school programs to government job listings in nine major cities, including New York and San Francisco.

The face of the program is Opportunity.Census.gov, which will enable people to access the Opportunity Project data-sets. This information currently covers eight American cities — Baltimore, Detroit, Kansas City (MO), New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington DC. It provides details about civic resources and amenities at the neighborhood level — everything from local home prices to the locations of nearby grocery stores and playgrounds. The data is sourced from public institutions including the Census Bureau, the departments of Health and Human Services, Education, Commerce and Agriculture. Primarily, this data archive will power a tool developed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

City councillors are getting ready to make vital information about fires and medical emergencies available to the public — including tech-savvy Torontonians who might just make the next life-saving app. A council committee approved two motions Monday to have the fire and paramedic services make data from their LiveCAD system — which tracks calls for help in real time — open for the public to see and download. Both were instructed to work with the city’s legal department to make the information available without compromising the privacy of Torontonians. As part of International Open Data Day we spent the morning with a bunch of like minded people poring over some open Census South Africa data. Excellent initiative, @opendatadurban, I’m very excited to see where this is all going and look forward to contributing to the journey! The data above show the distribution of ages in a segment of the South African population who have either no schooling (blue) or have completed Grade 12 (orange). Being a subset of the complete data set, this does not tell the full story, but it’s still a rather interesting view on the state of education in South Africa. Hackers, developers, statisticians, analysts and many other Edmontonians participated in the Hackathon at Stanley A. Milner Library. The event was based around International Open Data day, where governments release large portions of raw information and stats, which can be used to make apps, maps, and other programs. The Edmonton Public Library’s Alex Carruthers says one group is developing an app about the history of Edmonton, through photos. “They have a map interface and they’re putting all the photo’s on each part of the map so that it’ll be an app, eventually, where you can stand in a part of Edmonton and see pictures of it, throughout history.” International Open Data Day is celebrated in 255 other regions around the world.

Conservationists have criticised the decision to withdraw funding from a network of tens of thousands of local wildlife volunteers who collect data on the health of a variety of species and act as the “eyes and ears” of the government’s nature watchdog. Local environmental record centres (Lercs), which collect and collate records of everything from great crested newts to bats and are used to inform planning decisions on legally protected species, have been told that a four-year deal to collect data is to end just one year in. Last year, Natural England began funding almost 40 Lercs, which employ 128 staff across the UK, 500 volunteers in offices, and an estimated tens of thousands more who record insects, plants and habitats in their spare time.

Guelph, Ont., March 4, 2016 – The City of Guelph is celebrating Open Data Day 2016 by launching Guelph’s new online open data portal with 32 data sets covering areas such as transportation, solid waste and parks. The portal is an interactive public data management system. Residents can view the raw data sets through built-in maps to easily understand the information. By releasing its data through the portal, the City is able to increase transparency while encouraging the public to share and reuse the information helping to drive the creation of services that deliver value for citizens. In 2014 and 2015 the City’s Hackaton participants used open data sets to develop applications such as the waste sorting app which is available on open.guelph.ca.
