As part of a White House initiative to utilize data to “improve economic mobility for all Americans,” Seattle-based online real estate brokerage Redfin today unveiled a new product that grades neighborhoods based on proximity to jobs. Called “Opportunity Score,” the new tool shows U.S neighborhoods that have nearby jobs which pay $40,000 and are within a 30-minute commute, even for those that don’t own a car. “Affordability is a growing challenge, one we see first hand as a real estate brokerage helping people buy and sell homes,” Redfin Chief Economist Nela Richardson said in a blog post. “But the price of a home or the cost of rent is only part of the equation.

Some data scientists are now turning the lens on law enforcement itself in an effort to increase public insight into how well police officers are doing their jobs. Last year, the city of Indianapolis and Code for America teamed up to launch Project Comport — an open-data platform for sharing information on complaints and use of force incidents.

On Monday, the White House Office of the Press Secretary announced the launch of “The Opportunity Project,” a new effort leveraging open data to better the “economic mobility” for American citizens. The goal of The Opportunity Project is to make Federal and local data easier to understand and digest, so that it can be used to help fix problems in local communities. Using this data will help citizens determine access to opportunity in specific neighborhoods and break down inequity.

A new website uses U.S. government open data to help communities get better at providing jobs, housing, transportation, schools and other neighborhood amenities. The Obama administration Monday unveiled a new open data portal that melds tools from various federal and local government agencies to help communities find ways to improve their residents’ lives. The Opportunity Project is “grounded in the president’s background as a community organizer,” said Aden van Noppen, a special adviser within the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, adding it was a form of “participatory development” based on the principle that “people are experts on their own lives.” The project, which is hosted by the Census Bureau at opportunity.census.

Close to fifty healthcare information technology organizations have signed the Patient Safety Movement Foundation’s Open Data Pledge, according to a press release. The Open Data Pledge aims to encourage healthcare technology companies to share health data to improve patient safety. The agreement calls for more transparency and health information exchange across the healthcare ecosystem. An increase in data sharing allows engineers and researchers to develop predictive analytics for improved patient care. “We thank each and every one of these companies who are leading the way to safer patient care by giving their data,” said Joe Kiani, Founder of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation.

The Obama administration launched a new open data initiative called the Opportunity Project at a White House event this afternoon. During the event, officials highlighted new efforts to help communities use open data to drive community services around housing, job access, education and transportation. “The Administration is releasing a unique package of federal and local datasets in an easy-to-use format and accelerating a new way for the federal government to collaborate with local leaders, technologists and community members to use data and technology to tackle inequities and strengthen their communities,” said a White House fact sheet. President Barack Obama is aiming to boost Americans’ financial mobility with a new open data push dubbed “The Opportunity Project,” the White House announced March 7. The broad-based initiative includes work from federal agencies and the private sector alike, centered on getting actionable federal and metropolitan data into the hands of citizens who can use it.
