How can local and federal governments contribute to the digital transformation, citizen engagement and information transparency? Some of these questions were in focus last weekend (4.-6. of March), when CodeAcross and OpenDataDay events were held in Zagreb. Events included different panels focusing on information science curriculums and the importance of open data for governments and communities. Weekend hackaton that followed panel discussions motivated projects focused on public education infrastructure such as public schools geocoding project. Another related project was connecting and comparing available study programs and corresponding student quotas with available jobs currently listed in National Employment Bureau.

The Opportunity Project is a new open data project that is lead by the White House to make local and federal datasets sortable and available online. Wired reporter Issie Lapowsky writes the site will have data on government job listings, crime, school programs, and much more. It will also have an app that assists families with finding housing or childcare. The idea of the project was originally initiated by President Obama. “The president has really been focused on the idea of how do you get the force of data to benefit everyday Americans?” says Chief US Data Scientist DJ Patil. The White House is pushing for greater civic engagement through an open data initiative called the “Opportunity Project”. The project was demonstrated at an event held in Washington DC yesterday afternoon. The outward facing part of the initiative is an open data portal managed by the Census Bureau that houses a range of municipal data that policymakers and developers can use and learn from. Federal data sets are also included on the website and the White House says that more are in the pipeline. The White House is also using the portal as a hub for data tools that were created in collaboration with eight cities to help users understand what is available in the data and make sense of it.

If you can inspire people to make tools that help communities understand and improve themselves by releasing the data they need, they will. That, at least, is what the White House is hoping with the launch of The Opportunity Project, a new initiative from the Obama administration that builds upon nearly seven years of effort to release government data to the public, for the public. The White House is hoping to inspire developers to build tools using federal and city data that will make it easier for decision makers to access the information they need. That’s far from new: The White House has been trying to inspire the nation’s software developers to build tools using open government data since May 2009, when the former US chief information officer Vivek Kundra first launched Data.

The White House’s new open data initiative, the Opportunity Project, aims to improve economic mobility for citizens with the release of federal and local datasets and easy-to-use digital tools. The Opportunity Project launched March 7 in conjunction with the Census Bureau’s release of its Opportunity.Census.gov platform, which allows developers, community groups and local governments to build or use tools for finding jobs, housing, transportation, schools and neighborhood amenities. The site includes health, commercial and agricultural datasets from federal agencies, as well as publically available data generated primarily by the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Local datasets were supplied by Baltimore; Detroit; Kansas City, Mo.

A year after Premier Wade MacLauchlan committed to making government data more open and accessible, tech types in Charlottetown took to their computers Saturday in celebration of International Open Data Day. The group spent much of Saturday building applications based on open data offered up by the province, a main sponsor of the event. Organizer Dustin Sparks said the day is about making information more accessible to the general public. “It’s something that’s gaining a lot of attention here and momentum,” he said. “And that’s why the government was happy to sponsor this event, it’s an on-going conversation that is pretty exciting.

IRVINE, Calif.–(Business Wire)– The Patient Safety Movement Foundation announced today that 49 healthcare technology companies have signed the Patient Safety Movement’s Open Data Pledge, a public pledge to share their data to promote patient safety. The pledge is designed to foster a marketplace of data analytics to encourage entrepreneurs to develop novel uses of health data that will improve patient safety and reduce preventable deaths. If enough medical technology companies share the data their products are purchased for, it allows engineers and researchers to develop predictive algorithms that notify clinicians and patients of dangerous trends. The pledge does not ask any company to share protected or proprietary data or not follow all the privacy laws.

The UA has created a Center for Digital Society and Data Studies to address some of the major challenges and disciplinary divides that data have introduced. With the digital age emerging at an increasingly fast speed, issues with digitizing technology, data capabilities and social media technologies are now being addressed with a new center. Catherine Brooks, director for the center, said the UA is already doing this sort of work. “The School of Information at the university is already an interdisciplinary place where thinkers, programmers and scientists explore and address today’s big questions and problems relative to information, analytic tools and today’s societal issues,” Brooks said.

We were rooting around online for Mayor Jim Kenney’s proposed budget documents last week and breathed a sign of relief when press secretary (and former KYW City Hall reporter) Mike Dunn tweeted them out. We liked how the budget docs were posted on alpha.phila.gov, the redesign-in-progress of the city’s website, which is easier and nicer to use than phila.gov. But! They were PDFs. PDFs are the scourge of the open-data set. Code for Philly’s Chris Alfano reminded us that last year, the Nutter administration made a big move by releasing budget documents in an open format. That is, not just PDFs, but files that people and machines can do something with. They also released a budget visualization.
