More Than Ones and Zeros, Cary’s Open Data Portal Gives Purpose to Common Datasets Open Data Portal features more than two dozen commonly requested datasets CARY, NC – On the heels of Triangle Open Data Day, the Town of Cary is unveiling its new place to virtually play with public data. The Open Data Portal, found at http://data.townofcary.org, lists more than two dozen commonly requested datasets to view, map and analyze within the portal, or download for off-site analysis. Datasets currently available for public consumption focus on topics like crime and safety, development, permits and inspection, and winter weather preparation. While additional datasets are anticipated to be added later this year, citizens may request specific datasets via the “Contact Us” tab on the portal.

Who owns our genetic heritage? It’s a contentious question in the multi-billion-dollar genetics industry. Scientists now know not only all three billion-plus letters of the human genome, but many of the key genes that cause hereditary ailments including cancers, autism, Down syndrome, and Parkinson’s. That’s expensive knowledge, and some firms and institutions that footed the bill for research don’t want to just give it away. “Companies are going to do as much as they can to collect as much genetic data as possible,” says Sabah Oney, a biotech entrepreneur most recently with prenatal DNA testing firm Ariosa Diagnostics. “Whoever owns the most data is going to be the king.” Others say that companies should compete on services they offer, not the data they have collected.

Women-led businesses are the driving force of the UK economy, according to data compiled by Founders4Schools, a company that focuses on inspiring young people to set up their own business. Figures from the open-government and LinkedIn data sets showed that the average annual turnover for businesses led by women is £11,719,080, more than the average business annual turnover of £11,284,634. The data was compiled using cluster maps to reveal women-led businesses in the UK with £1 million to £250 million in revenue. The data, which was released to mark International Women’s Day, showed that the 762 women-led businesses revealed on the cluster maps are expanding at a medium growth rate of 30 per cent a year.

On Friday and Saturday, hundreds of civic hackers and open data enthusiasts gathered at FHI 360 in Dupont for the fifth annual Open Data Day DC. Similar gatherings graced more than 200 cities around the world and all events were part of a yearly hackathon and training event. The whole thing got Technical.ly thinking, deeply, about open data. After sitting in on a session about open government and open data in D.C. specifically (and what can be done to increase the openness of D.C. government), there were a couple questions we couldn’t stop mulling over. These questions, and more, were certainly present in the room at Open Data Day DC. They were touched on, in various forms, here and there. But ultimately the session was (perhaps rightly so) more practical than philosophical. Technical.

The company adds a storage server to its Cloudline systems and new models to its lineup of Altoline open networking switches. Hewlett Packard Enterprise is bringing storage into its growing portfolio of open data center infrastructure systems and expanding its lineup of open networking switches. HPE officials on March 8 unveiled a storage server for its Cloudline family of systems and four new models of its Altoline 6900 open switches. In addition, the company announced a new Helion OpenStack cloud distribution that includes reference architectures that are optimized for the OpenStack Swift object storage project.

The Iron Yard is one of more than 30 organizations nationwide partnering with the White House to use open data from federal and local government agencies to improve economic mobility for Americans. The project is meant to help citizens have better access to housing, jobs, transportation, education opportunities and other aspects of communities. The Iron Yard will incorporate Opportunity Project data as part of special prize challenges. Students will be encouraged to use their final project to build apps and other tools that can help the community, according to a release by the White House. The project is part of the proposal by President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address to expand technology to address challenges.

The city of Miami has a detailed map, created by its downtown development authority, where anyone can see planned and proposed real estate development projects in the city. I learned about Miami’s map while attending Open Data Day, an annual international event that’s held in dozens of cities around the globe. In each, people come together to brainstorm how to tell stories, create Web applications and create visualizations using public, open data. While attending Open Data Day, I saw many examples of what I consider great local, civic journalism — work that gathered data, processed it and then told a story that would help people better understand their local community or government.

In 2000, Canadian miner Goldcorp changed its fortunes through a unique strategy: giving away its proprietary technical data. Dubbed the “Goldcorp Challenge”, the firm made all of its geological information available to the public. And offered $575,000 in prize money to geologists who could use the data to tell the company where to find the next big discovery on the company’s gold property in Ontario — a move that ultimately led to $6 billion in new gold resources being discovered. And this week, one of the world’s go-to oil and gas nations said it is trying something similar to reboot exploration. That’s the U.K. Where the country’s Oil and Gas Authority said yesterday it will make all data on the North Sea freely available for the first time ever.

Forty-nine healthcare technology companies have signed the Patient Safety Movement Foundation’s Open Data Pledge, promising to share their data to promote patient safety. The announcement on Tuesday comes just days after Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell revealed in her keynote at HIMSS16 that health IT companies that provide 90 percent of electronic health records used by U.S. hospitals had pledged to implement three core commitments to improve the flow of health information to consumers and healthcare providers: consumer access, no information blocking and standards implementation. [Also: EHR giants among those taking pledge to standardize health IT] Cerner, Epic and Meditech were among those who answered the federal government’s call to sign the pledge.
