Canada’s public servants are proposing to uncover numerous government secrets as part of a sweeping overhaul that was promised in the last election campaign by federal Liberals, says a draft strategy document leaked to National Observer. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised, in the campaign, to be more open and transparent, seizing on complaints about the former government creating a culture of secrecy. The new strategy document, although only a draft at this point, is proposing how public servants can help the government loosen efforts to control information and revive public trust in federal institutions, through major changes in day-to-day operations of all departments and agencies.

Boston College School of Social Work Professor David Takeuchi and Associate Professor Tiziana Dearing were at the White House on March 7 for the launch of the Obama Administration’s new initiative, Expanding Opportunity with Open Data on Building Stronger Ladders of Opportunity: A White House Demo, a program for which BCSSW will serve as an initial academic research partner. Dearing, Takeuchi, and fellow SSW faculty member Ruth McRoy are the co-leaders of the new BC Social Work initiative “Research and Innovations in Social, Economic, and Environmental Equity (RISE),” convened to play an important role in the White House initiative.

The U.S. States Open Data Census took a new approach when rating open data across all 50 states and Puerto Rico. It allowed states to improve their results as the census looked into their open data initiatives. Instead of a closed assessment process, states watched their scores emerge and made improvements. U.S. Open Data launched the census early last year and completed it in February 2016. Waldo Jaquith, the organization’s executive director, announced the final results via a tweet. Governments approached Jaquith with the inspiration for the census. “This whole project wasn’t my idea,” he said. “While I was on stage last year at the Socrata Customer Summit, someone asked, ‘Is there a data assessment for state data?’ It took, like, five people saying ‘Does this exist?’ for me to do it.

The Smart City Forum is a newly launched collaboration of TM Forum members that consists of seven cities working to help drive the creation of smart cities worldwide. The initial cities with members in the new forum’s leadership are: Los Angeles; Lisbon, Portugal; Dublin, Ireland; Vancouver; Atlanta; Bristol, U.K.; and Toronto. Eventually the forum plans to include members from more than 100 smart cities and governments around the world. TM Forum is an organization with 950 member companies that work to bring about global standards to the telecommunications business and it’s broadening to include the Internet of Things (IoT), smart health, smart climate and smart cities. “We’ve formed a leadership team with seven cities,” said Carl Piva, vice president of strategic programs at TM Forum.

Paywalls stop research ideas dead in their tracks. These obstructions, while counterproductive to the digital, crowd-accelerated innovation world we inhabit, have a distinct purpose: corporate profit margins. For-profit academic publishers in 2015 accumulated $25.2 billion in profit. While this opulence helps to uncork many bottles of champagne for publisher board members looking for solid return on investment, that profit margin does less for society looking to solve complex problems with access to cutting edge information. Students David Carroll and Joe McArthur, along with a handful of colleagues, recently pushed the open data movement forward with their release of an open access directed app called the Open Data Button.

The Open Access Button today announces the beta release of the Open Data Button, a tool to help people find the data underlying research papers and request the release of new data. Every day, researchers cannot access the research data needed to verify results and build on others’ research. Open research data increases the reproducibility and transparency of research, and enables greater innovation. The Open Data Button app is available for Chrome and can be downloaded for free at opendatabutton.org. “Getting data off hard drives and made public and reusable is one of the important challenges in research,” said Joseph McArthur, co-founder of the Open Access Button and Assistant Director of the Right to Research Coalition.

The NYPD newest crime statistics map, CompStat 2.0, was viewed about 75,000 times in its first week. If you zoom out on the map, New York City looks like one big blue dot of serious crimes, including rape, robbery and murder. Parks and beaches seem like the safest places in the city, but often it’s because the NYPD can’t pinpoint crimes that occur in open areas. Noah Veltman with the WNYC Data News Team says making crime statistics more visible is a good step, but that we should be careful how much we read into dots on a map. “This is data that is designed for humans to look at but not work with,” Veltman said.
