Developers have been filing the rough edges off Apache Hadoop ever since the open source project started to gain traction in the enterprise. But if Hadoop is going to take the next step and become the backbone of analytics for businesses of all sizes—as many hope it will—then the platform needs to shed some of its technical complexity and embrace simplicity. There are many ways to parse this call for greater simplicity (which, ironically, is itself a source of complexity). Needless to say, the complexity that appears to be keeping Hadoop back lies primarily in how organizations build, deploy, and manage their Hadoop stacks and the big data apps that run on them. Take the Hadoop distribution shipped by Hortonworks (NASDAQ: HDP) as an example.

Research data produced by the JRC or in cooperation with other partners is now publicly available, in support of the European Commission’s strategy on Open Science for improved circulation of knowledge and thus innovation for generating growth. The first version of the JRC Data Catalogue is online and its datasets can be freely consulted and downloaded. This catalogue will also feed into the EU Open Data portal, which is the single point of access to a growing range of data produced by the EU Institutions. Interested users have access to data on a wide range of topics, such as climate, freshwater resources, alien species, soil or forests. The information can be used for further research and other projects, providing the source is acknowledged.

With spring approaching, outdoor allergen and pollution levels will soon be on the rise. Both are common triggers for asthma patients, yet they can be very difficult to predict, never mind avoid or control. French medtech startup, however, has 3D printed a prototype product called Connect’inh: a Bluetooth-connected asthma inhaler that merges both patient and open data to create real-time maps of potential trigger areas, and to help doctors and asthma patients better understand the disease. Connect’inh was designed and developed by Kappa Santé, a French company specializing in digital solutions for epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology, that is, the study of patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease in defined populations.

Dubai: The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) launched a smart tool at an event on Sunday. The tool will facilitate use of available financial data by current health-care investors using the Health Accounts System of Dubai (HASD). The tool provides round-the-clock access to vital information to help enhance better decision-making in the health sector by comparing the organisation’s financial standing with those in the peer group and assist all hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, health insurance companies and third party administrators in Dubai. As per the HASD, the total health expenditure in Dubai was Dh12.77 billion in 2014, out of which 70 per cent was funded by the private sector. The total expenditure on health is expected to increase in the following years as more people become insured.

In a panel Friday at South by Southwest Interactive, Marilyn Strickland, the mayor of Tacoma, Washington, said cities should take a page from the private sector’s playbook and use data in an experimental way to attempt to make a difference. “Using data analytics helps government do a better job,” Strickland said.

When the city of Bellevue, Wash., launched its open data portal last month, it made a conscious effort to present targeted datasets that would be useful to residents. Now, thanks to the ongoing transparency initiative, visitors to the portal can find datasets that help illuminate Bellevue’s economy, neighborhoods, public safety, budget and efforts to be green, among other things. “We targeted high-value data sets for the launch,” said Sabra Schneider, chief operations officer in the Information Technology Department. “The open data and open budget sites are an important step in continuing Bellevue’s work to be more innovative, data-driven and responsive to our growing communities.” Bellevue is a city of about 130,000 people, across Lake Washington from Seattle.
