Open Data Delaware is holding its third speaker night of the year this Tuesday. The event will feature Atnre Alleyne and Shanna Ricketts from the Delaware Department of Education’s Teacher and Leader Effectiveness Unit. Alleyne is the director of talent management and educator effectiveness and Ricketts is a data strategist. They’ll cover how the DDOE uses data, identify education data that’s available to the public and talk about possible high-impact projects. There will also be time to collaborate and work on projects. The meetup is from 6-8 p.m. at 1313 Innovation.

Thought leaders from Silicon Valley to Washington to DC are rightly excited by the prospect of a future in which data science, statistics, and analytics play a larger role in the the shaping of public policy and discourse. But before computers can process large volumes of data to identify correlations, perform classifications, or generate predictive models, humans need to furnish them with appropriate data sets and understand the meaning of the raw data. A recent incident shows how even the most basic data-based calculation can be totally off given the challenges of finding and understanding useful data. Amid all the recent debate regarding police, violence, and racial bias, it has emerged that national or even regional statistics on police behavior are not readily available.

In the Netherlands it’s still possible to create legal companies without revealing the identity of the actual owner, Criminals abuse such constructions for purposes of corruption, fraud, money laundering, organised crime and cartels. A public registry, the so-called UBO registry, aims to change all that. But it can only happen if the registry is accessible to all. A UBO registry is a central registry which contains the names of the ultimate beneficiaries and other legal corporate entities.

This is the first part out of a four part series recap from the International Open Data Day Stockholm 2016. The question of inclusivity was one of the questions explored this year in Stockholm by inviting people into the world of open data. The focus was on participation and user input for the projects that Open Knowledge Sweden and Wikimedia Sweden are running. The International Open Data Day in Stockholm 2016 was held on 5th March at the Wikimedia Sweden offices. It was a relaxed atmosphere and very casual event – yet very productive! The featured projects were FrågaStaten.se, Local Open Data Index with both regions and municipalities as well as the project on Connected Open Cultural Heritage Data (Kopplade Öppna Kulturarvsdata) (KÖK) in Swedish.
