The genomics community has been held up as an exmplar in data sharing practices since the human genome project, but the metabolomics community is catching up fast, with the Metabolights database being the fast growing repository at the EBI. In this light, GigaScience has been actively involved in reaching out and engaging with the metabolomics community in order to enhance the sharing of data and to enable researchers in this community, as well as those integrating such data. On top of promoting and publishing on metabolomics dissemination and standards efforts, we started getting more pro-active with our first BYO Data Party (hackathon event) in 2014, held in our Hong Kong office that was co-organised by us and the ISA Team at the Oxford e-Research Centre.

FOR 26-year-old iPad addict Zhou Wen, going to work is a lot like more play on his beloved device. Though employed by textile producer the Ruyi Group, Zhou has never used a sewing needle. His job is to drive a battery-powered car around a new Ruyi plant in northwest China to locations shown on the map on his iPad and operate machines there following instructions on the screen. “It is like a game, with new quests every day,” Zhou said. Before Ruyi and many other Chinese companies raced into the digital age, working in its plants wasn’t like this. The fact that Zhou’s predecessors used to have to walk up to 16 km per shift in their patrols of the machines shows how far China has come in a generation or less.

The White House has announced the launch of an open data effort aimed at improving economic mobility for all Americans. The public-private Opportunity Project seeks to put data and tools in the hands of civic leaders, community organizations, and families to help them navigate information about critical resources such as access to jobs, housing, transportation, schools, and other neighborhood amenities. Among other things, the administration has released a package of federal and local datasets and accelerated a new way for the government to collaborate with local leaders, technologists, and community members to tackle inequities and strengthen their communities. The effort will include the launch of Opportunity.Census.

In this week’s edition of our open source news roundup, we highlight The Opportunity launched by The White House, a call for public comment on a draft of Federal Source Code policy, the new Open Data Button, and more. The White House announced the launch of The Opportunity Project, an effort to leverage open data to increase economic mobility and help citizens find services and jobs in their communities. The new Opportunity.Census.gov site provides access to The Opportunity Project tools and data sets. The Census Bureau has created an Opportunity Module for CitySDK, a software development kit designed to help developers make use of open government data.

Data privacy, a topic that ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft have discussed with Austin City Council, is a key part of the conversation surrounding integrating transportation options to create smart cities, said Andrew Salzberg, senior operations manager for Uber. During a March 12 panel on connecting transportation technology during the South by Southwest Conferences & Festivals, Salzberg said the definition of a smart city varies in the industry. “For us it’s clever uses of the available resources. For us that’s cars on the road,” he said. “How this plays out and what we’re hoping to do is to come to a place where every car on the road is shared.” He said Uber is looking at all ways of getting people to share their vehicles, especially given that 80 percent of U.S.

That’s the reaction some New Brunswickers had when they opened their property tax bill this past week. Shawn Peterson had a similar reaction when he got his back in 2008, shortly after he bought his first home. “I basically looked at it scratching my head saying ‘I have no idea what any of this means,’” Peterson says. Property tax assessments are supposed to be reflective of the value of a property. That can be somewhat subjective so taxpayers are allowed to appeal their property assessment within 30 days if they think it’s unfair. However, you have to make good case for it. One of the best ways to do this is to show that the similar properties surrounding yours have a lower evaluation, but you need the numbers to back it up. So Peterson decided to do some digging.

Climate change and the other complex issues facing our planet require the application of vast amounts of data, information, and knowledge to be fully understood. No single scientist or organization has all of the data, tools, or capabilities to do this work; only by bringing diverse research communities together around shared data and information will these problems be addressed. However, ecology, geology, and the other sciences that depend on field observations pose special challenges for data and sample sharing. These disciplines often rely on time-sensitive, perishable data and samples that are temporally and spatially unique: the observations of an ash plume evolving or the samples amassed during a research cruise to assess the impacts of an oil spill.

The Sunlight Foundation is excited to announce that six more cities are joining the What Works Cities initiative: Boston; Charlotte; Little Rock, Ark.; Milwaukee; Raleigh, N.C.; and Victorville, Calif. Of these Sunlight is providing technical expertise to Charlotte, Little Rock, Milwaukee, Raleigh and Victorville as they either develop open data policies and programs or enhance pre-existing ones. We are excited to work with these new cities in each of their specific contexts. For example, in Little Rock, not only are we supporting with recommendations for the city’s first open data policy, but we will also be assisting with its implementation by facilitating a data governance committee and assisting with an inventory of data held by the city.

When it comes to data centers, many of the providers of hosting services often have proprietary hooks that, for all intents and purposes, wind up locking IT organizations into a specific facility. To address that issue, Vapor IO has created a Vapor Open Data Center Runtime Environment (OpenDCRE), an open RESTful application programming interface through which IT organizations can monitor and control equipment in a data center. At the Open Compute Project Summit this week, Vapor IO announced that with the release of version 1.2 of OpenDCRE it is now providing support for the Open Compute Project (OCP) led by Facebook, as well as servers from AppliedMicro and modular data center infrastructure from BASELAYER.
