Experts say open data could generate steep profits but despite German politicians and business leaders’ support, progress has been slow. Ten minutes is the average amount of time it takes drivers to find a parking spot in European cities. Parkpocket is a free app designed to shorten the search, by directing users to nearby parking garages where spaces are still available. To build the app, founder Stefan Bader and his 16-member team use data gathered by German cities. But the results are sobering. The startup only receives data from six of around 60 cities already covered by the app. Hamburg and Cologne are model cities in this regard, said Mr. Bader, and Berlin and Bonn have also provided access to their data. Experts say Open Data could turn into a market worth billions.

Despite demands by the inventor of the World Wide Web, less than 10% of government data vital for sustainable development is open The lack of free access to government data – or ‘data poverty’ – is contributing to widening inequality around the world, according to Sir Tim Berners-Lee. The inventor of the World Wide Web has called out governments for not doing enough to publish their data online, which can help combat corruption and result in vital new services for citizens. The Web Foundation, an organisation set up by Sir Tim to improve global access to the World Wide Web, today revealed that more than half of the 92 countries it studies now have open data initiatives in place.

In the world of public transit, data is a valuable thing. And historically, it’s been the purview of public transit agencies. They’re the folks who know where the buses are, and they use their own, often archaic systems—paper schedules mounted on bus shelters, for example—to dole out select info to the public. In recent years, that dynamic has changed. Cities, states, and countries are embracing the idea of open data, turning all their information over to any company, group, or citizen interested in doing something productive with it. In an era where smartphones are nearly as common as people with hands, government is now the platform, not the product.

Over half of countries studied now have open data initiatives, but still less than 10% of the government data vital for sustainable development is open Today the Web Foundation, set up by World Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, announced the results of the 3rd Open Data Barometer, a global snapshot of the state of open government data in 92 countries. Open data is data that is openly published online and is free for all to access and reuse. For the first time, over half of the countries in our study have open data initiatives in place. However, faster progress on translating commitments into action is needed to close data gaps in the developing world, the study warns.

Despite the push for government dashboards and open data portals, much of the data we use at Reveal still must be obtained through public records requests. Summary data on government websites often comes from more granular and detailed databases. But asking for that data can be a challenge because of the technical issues you might face. The first time I requested data from a government agency, I had no idea where to begin. How would I get the appropriate dataset for my story? How could I avoid getting summary or aggregate data or data in PDFs? Here are some things I learned along the way. Before I begin writing a public records request, I try to have a conversation with someone at the agency who understands the data.
