The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has released more than 300 terabytes worth of high-quality information on the Large Hadron Collider for everyone’s use, media reports said. The information is available on the CERN Open Data Portal, which was built in collaboration with members of CERN’s IT Department and Scientific Information Service. The data follows a previous release from November 2014, which made around 27 terabytes of research information collected in 2010 available. Kati Lassila-Perini, a physicist who works on the Compact Muon Solenoid detector, said that “members of the CMS Collaboration put in lots of effort and thousands of person-hours each of service work in order to operate the CMS detector and collect this research data for our analysis.

Albania’s foreign debt went up by 923 million euros (1.04 billion U.S. dollars) in 2015, 13.9 percent up from the previous year, amid tepid growth of the economy, the Albanian Daily News reported Saturday. Total external debt of the Southeastern European country stood at 7.6 billion euros (8.5 billion dollars), with 41 percent in government debt, 23 percent in direct investment, 18 percent debt in other sectors, 17 percent in banks and 1 percent by the monetary authority, according to statistics from Open Data. The debt was mainly invested in such sectors as energy, water supply and sanitation, transport, infrastructure, agriculture, health and environmental protection, the report said. It warned against the potential problems created by foreign debt growing faster than economic output.

As Philadelphia’s chief data officer, Tim Wisniewski, 28, holds a fairly new job title. He helps publish the city’s data—employee salaries, crimes and property assessments, among other things—for public consumption on the Web. It’s all in the spirit of transparency and spurring civic innovation. Since Mr. Wisniewski took over in 2014, he has seen a number of promising outcomes, he says. In a recent interview, he discussed open data and how it might shape city life going forward. Edited excerpts follow. WSJ: What can Philadelphia’s people get out of all this open data? MR. Nigeria is currently ranked 67th out of 92 countries in the Open Data Barometer published by the Web Foundation. The Web Foundation is published by the World Wide Web inventor, Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s. The report obtained at the weekend showed that Nigeria has open government data available on both health and education. This, the promoters of the initiative described as a good step forward for transparency and innovation in the country. They therefore stressed the need for more data to be opened to the public to allow citizens to access and analyse information for free, and find ways to improve policies that affect them.

Alex Koma covers state and local government IT news and developments across the U.S., writing regularly on cloud computing, cybersecurity, dat… Police departments participating in the White House’s Police Data Initiative want other agencies to know that there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain from becoming more transparent with their data. At a gathering hosted by the administration’s Office of Science and Technology Policy at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, several police chiefs from the 53 agencies already working with the White House on the project did their best to demystify the process of posting their policing data online.

Taking http://www.healthdata.gov/dataset/top-syndicated-pages-cdcgov-weekly-pag… as an example, the data.json distributions from items in data.cdc.gov/data.json are added to this site’s catalog as CKAN resources and the “landingPage” is listed under metadata as the “homepage”. I would suggest making a tweak, similar to what data.gov has done, at http://catalog.data.gov/dataset/demographic-statistics-by-zip-code-acfc9 for example.

On an average ADSL connection, it may take several hours to download it (about 2 hours at 1Mbps). The CMS collaboration at CERN has just released more than 300 terabytes (TB) of high-quality open data. These include more than 100TB of data from proton collisions at 7 TeV (teraelectronvolts), making up half the data collected at the LHC by the CMS detector in 2011. This release follows a previous one from November 2014, which made available around 27TB of research data collected in 2010. The data comes in two types and is available on the CERN Open Data Portal. The primary datasets are in the same format used by the collaboration to perform research. On the other hand, the derived datasets require a lot less computing power and can be readily examined by university or high school students.

Yesterday, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) dropped a staggering amount of raw data from the Large Hadron Collider on the internet for anyone to use: 300 terabytes worth. The data includes a 100 TB “of data from proton collisions at 7 TeV, making up half the data collected at the LHC by the CMS detector in 2011.” The release follows another infodump from 2014, and you can take a look at all of this information through the CERN Open Data Portal. Some of the information released is simply the raw data that CERN’s own scientists have been using, while another segment is already processed, with the anticipated audience being high school science courses.
