Programming education organizations Free Code Camp and CodeNewbie are out with preliminary results from a big survey of adult coding neophytes conducted to find out who they are and how they’re learning their dev skills. One of the early findings: “A vast majority are interested in working as Web developers, as opposed to other developer roles.” Specifically, 38 percent of respondents listed “full-stack Web developer” when asked what development role they’re interested in. Another 21 percent listed “front-end Web developer” and 11 percent listed “back-end Web developer.” So, in total, some 70 percent of the 15,624 respondents who answered that question want to become Web developers of some type.

HYDERABAD: A final year student of MA Political Science at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), Garima Goel has been selected as the Baillie Gifford prize fellow for the year 2016-17. The fellowship is given to only one person in the world and she would be studying MRes in Contemporary India at King’s College, London. “With the whole digitisation, there is a lot of data that is available as open source and it is kind of exciting. As the national conversation about police shootings continues, the Salt Lake Police Department is joining 53 other agencies and launching a website to post open data about how often officers use their weapons. The web page is a result of the White House pushing agencies to be more open about their police use of force.  Called the “Police Data Initiative” agencies are publishing similar data including the race of the suspect, weapon used and whether the suspect was injured. Advocates say it’s an important step to open up data that’s often kept close to the vest and some say it doesn’t go far enough. I say it is a dangerous slope that if we go down, we better do it right. I like the idea of transparency but I do question the motives of some that are demanding the data.  Let’s face it.

Since 2000, US cloud providers have relied on the Safe Harbour agreement with the EU. This assured the providers and their European clients that employee and customer data sent to US-based servers would be subject to the same data protection rules as if they were kept in Europe. So when the European Court of Justice ruled last October that the Safe Harbour accord was invalid as it did not do enough to protect that EU data from US government surveillance, those same cloud providers rushed to assure their customers that they were on top of the situation. For one provider, NetSuite, the timing could not have been better. The day Safe Harbour fell, Zach Nelson, the chief executive, was in London to announce plans to open data centres in Dublin and the Netherlands.
