The development community currently spends an estimated $2.6bn collecting data on results indicators – such as immunisations and maternal mortality rates. With 230 new sustainable development goal (SDG) indicators to track over the next 15 years, we are ready to invest $1bn more every year in results data. But how can we make sure these investments pay off? Local decision-makers – such as government officials and donor staff – will need to use results data, collected at local level, to allocate resources. While international efforts are important, the quality, usefulness and availability of local data will have the biggest impact on the world’s most vulnerable; local people make decisions about the budgets and services that will affect those we do not wish to leave behind.

It was a time when eggs, potatoes and butter were staple foods – and ‘meat and two veg’ was the standard meal in Britain. But four decades later, such humble ingredients have given way to kale, aubergine and houmous and we have seen an explosion in eating out. Official data on families’ shopping habits reveals clearly the transformation of the British diet between 1974 and 2014. In this 40-year period we began to eat far less  sugar and preserves, flour, tinned meat, eggs, hot beverages, and potatoes. We’re also buying much less fat, bread, milk, biscuits and crispbreads. However, in the same period households began eating more condiments, cereals, fruit and fresh meat. And since 1992 – when the data on alcohol began to be collected – families have been drinking markedly more.

Smart cities have been on the agenda for decades, but only now are smart city pilot studies really hotting up, with the prospect that they will positively boom very soon. For example, the city of Santander in Spain has many thousands of sensors collecting data on everything from parking space availability to air quality. In Los Angeles, traffic lights automatically adjust their phases to optimise traffic flow, while in Barcelona waste bins are only emptied when sensors detect they are nearly full. In other places, plants are watered when soil sensors detect that they are dry, and parking and public transport are priced dynamically. So far, however, most of these efforts are isolated, standalone projects.

A collaboration between The Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) analytics, business intelligence and data management software and services provider SAS will give researchers access, analytics and data management tools to its database that includes 45 years of cardiovascular patient data collected by the Duke University Health System, including de-identified records for patients; data from more than 100,000 procedures; treatment histories, and more. The information can be used to test clinical hypotheses, develop clinical trial protocols and help researchers assess long-term outcomes and assess time trends. The DCRI and SAS are constructing a data governance plan to ensure the reliability of the data sets and to process requests as efficiently as possible.

At the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco last week, Samsung was all about the Internet of Things (IoT), but surprisingly, much of did not revolve around Tizen or SmartThings. Instead, the main focus was on its newly shipping Artik embedded boards, which ship with Fedora. There was some Tizen related news, however, including a new ”Smart View” SDK for improving mobile connectivity with Tizen-based Smart TVs, as well as a promise to bring Knox security support to Tizen. There were also more details on the upcoming, 64-bit capable Tizen 3.0. Samsung began shipping the most powerful of the Artik boards — the Artik 10 — and announced an IoT-oriented open Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Artik boards aimed at IoT.

On an average day, Brian Gesler works as a computer programmer at a Cleveland insurance company. But for one weekend last month, he was busy creating jet packs that could one day be used by astronauts on Mars.He crowded around tables in a conference room at NASA’s John H. Glenn Research Center campus with a team he’d just met. Some sketched prototypes across sheets hung on the walls, others pecked away frantically on laptops. They called themselves Moon Tang Clan.Gesler and his team were one of 17 groups in Cleveland that took part in the 2016 International Space Apps Challenge . Since 2012, the hackathon has brought together coders, artists, and general tinkerers to use open data provided by NASA to spark solutions to many of the aeronautics and space agency’s most pressing hurdles.

Open source is increasingly standard operating procedure in software, but nowhere is this more true than Internet of Things development. According to a new VisionMobile survey of 3,700 IoT developers, 91% of respondents use open source software in at least one area of their software stack. This is good news for IoT because only open source promises to reduce or eliminate the potential for lock-in imposed by proprietary “standards.” What’s perhaps most interesting in this affection for open source, however, is that even as enterprise developers have eschewed the politics of open source licensing, IoT developers seem to favor open source because “it’s free as in freedom.” According to VisionMobile’s survey data, IoT developers both use and contribute to open source projects.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Amid a growing national conversation about police shootings, Salt Lake City police are launching a website to post open data about how often officers use their weapons. The Utah department is part of a small but growing number of agencies around the country who are moving to put the information online in an effort to be more transparent. Advocates say it’s an important step to open up data that’s often kept close to the vest, though some say it doesn’t go far enough. The web page is an outgrowth of a White House push to make public more data about police use of force, according to Salt Lake Police. It’s one of 53 departments around the country participating in Police Data Initiative.
