Advocates say it’s an important step to open up data that’s often kept close to the vest, though some say it doesn’t go far enough. The web page is an outgrowth of a White House push to make public more data about police use of force, according to Salt Lake Police. It’s one of 53 departments around the country participating in Police Data Initiative. A handful of departments have posted spreadsheets of similar data to an online portal. “More departments are realizing that getting out ahead of this is more important than waiting for the next media incident to blow up and shift the narrative for them,” said Damian Ortellado, a research analyst with the Sunlight Foundation, which has been tracking the data released as part of the White House project.

An Open Data Showcase, hosted at Parliament by Land Information Minister Louise Upston last night, provided great examples of how innovative New Zealand businesses are coming up with entirely new business activities and finding ways to improve social and business services based around freely available information. “The presenters included companies with expertise in mapping, data visualisation and working with complex information,” Ms Upston said. “Freely available data – data that anyone can access, share and use to develop new products and services – drives entrepreneurship, business growth, scientific innovation and programmes for public good,” Ms Upston said.

Innovation is a tricky word to define. It has a whiff of excitement as well as – increasingly –inevitability, since technology is coloring our work and our lives. Development partners are adapting to explore the enormous potential of information and communication technologies. This, in turn, is introducing new actors, partnerships, approaches – such as InnovationXchange and the Global Innovation Exchange. It’s also generating tailored jargon, from tech for good, to data revolution for development and digital democracy and governance. In a country like Indonesia, innovation is most often associated in the context of the relentless surge of social media use and a pivot toward open data and open government. But there is another interesting phenomenon emerging here.

The 3rd Edition of the World Wide Web Foundation’s Open Data Barometer (ODB), released in April 2016 and covering 92 countries, ranks nations on three open data criteria: In this regional report we dig deeper into the Barometer’s results to take a closer look at the performance of the 21 Sub-Saharan African countries featured in the latest edition. The purpose of this regional analysis is to use the rich data to assess the state of play of open data across Africa, evaluating the readiness of African governments to implement open data practice and realise its potential to impact positively on the lives of citizens. The results of the 2015 ODB show that Africa is lagging behind other regions in the use and impact of open data.

The United Nations is running a competition to find new ways to use data for city challenges. The Big Ideas competition is looking for solutions in four key areas: basic service delivery, sustainable transport and energy, disaster and climate change resilience, and harmony in urban environments. It is open to all residents of the 10 ASEAN countries, as well as South Korea. Ideas must be new and use data from multiple sources, like big data, open data or crowdsourced data. Solutions must be cost efficient and easy for cities to implement. The winning idea from last year’s round was an app analysing the indoor atmosphere in Seoul trains to build a “metro unpleasantness index”. The contest is a collaboration between the United Nations and South Korean Government.

The Treasury Department has completed and released the final data format designed to standardize reporting of federal spending data in compliance with the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2014, the Data Coalition reported Monday. The department posted the DATA Act Information Model Schema v1.0 on its Federal Spending Transparency’s GitHub website Friday after it completed the schema’s initial version and published 57 data elements with the Office of Management and Budget in May 2015. “From the very beginning, we wanted to mandate a government-wide format to transform federal spending from disconnected documents and siloed systems into standardized, open data,” said Hudson Hollister, executive director of the Data Coalition.

The role of open data in communities and entrepreneurship is a key theme for the 2016 conference YORK REGION, ON, May 3, 2016 /CNW/ – The 2016 GO Open Data Conference (GOOD16) returns for the fourth year on May 6 & 7, this year held in York Region hosted by ventureLAB, the area’s Regional Innovation Centre. This annual conference drives the open data movement in Ontario. The theme of the 2016 conference is Better Living Through Open Data which will highlight the potential of open data to positively impact our communities. Ontario’s Open Data Directive, implemented on April 1, requires that all government data be made public, making for a more transparent and more efficient government. However, open data is not just about government transparency.
