As chief executive of the U.S. Government, the president sets and enforces policies that impact not only 300 million Americans and the United States’ $18-trillion economy, but the lives and prosperity of other people and countries around the world. With so much on the line, one would think that the president would use every tool imaginable to help shoulder this hefty load.

President Obama said himself in a 2015 interview with comedian Marc Maron that the presidency is a position akin to middle management. “Sometimes your job is just to make stuff work,” Obama said.

Well, now you can find out as the Harlingen Police Department is being more transparent with that information. The department is posting more reports on its website, where you can now find out what kinds of crime are being reported, how many car accidents we have and why motorists are being pulled over. HPD is one of four police agencies in the state that are elevating their level of transparency. That means increasing the public’s access to police information. By joining the White House National Police Data Initiative program, HPD becomes the first department in the Rio Grande Valley to do so.

Any modern city taking itself seriously today needs a chief technology/innovation/digital officer with a vision of the city of the future. They need to understand the technological trends that will impact their cities the coming 5-10 years and even further away. Data collection is one of the latest tools to better understand the moves and needs of citizens and to better understand the dynamics of local businesses. City governments need to engage with citizens in acts of co-creation in order to make their vision a reality. Cities often don’t work like that as they are the sum of organic growing, inconsistent planning and bad architectural choices using the wrong materials.

Secrecy and lack of information about UK public spending is so great that in more than a third of cases, the ordinary taxpayer can’t even know who has been awarded a Government or local authority contract, a new report has found. Spending data was so heavily redacted, the campaign group Transparency International claimed, that in just one month a single London borough – Hackney – recorded £14 million of payments without revealing to the public who got the money. Nationally, the Counting the Pennies report said that at least 35 per cent – more than a third – of published local and central government tender data did not even show who was awarded the contract. Descriptions of what public authorities had purchased were, the report said, often so vague as to be “almost meaningless.

SACRAMENTO – A new law signed by Governor Jerry Brown will help California meet the growing demand for water supply reliability and healthy ecosystems. The law, known as the Open and Transparent Water Data Act, was authored by Assemblymember Bill Dodd (D-Napa) and creates a transparent and universal platform for sharing water data across the state. In the midst of the most devastating drought in California history, this law will help move California towards a more effective water management system. “The drought has exposed the need for a modern water information system to address the state’s water supply,” said Assemblymember Dodd. “California does not suffer from a lack of water data, but from a lack of usable water data needed to make smart decisions.

Partnership for Resilience and Preparedness aims to make use of ‘Big Data’ to enhance US climate resilience Fresh from issuing a Presidential Memorandum requiring the US government to consider climate change impacts when developing its national security policies, doctrines and plans, the White House yesterday launched a major new initiative to strengthen the climate resilience of communities and businesses across the country. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced it has teamed up with the World Resources Institute (WRI), the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) and a network of partners to launch the Partnership for Resilience and Preparedness or PREP.
