The General Services Admninistration (GSA) has launched the U.S. Data Federation a new effort that will support government-wide data standardization and data federation initiatives across both Federal agencies and local governments. The GSA says that the Federation is designed to build on the work already done through websites like data.gov and is part of the GSA’s open government plan. GSA launched data.gov in 2009 with 47 datasets and has since worked with agencies and the White House to expand the catalog to nearly 200,000 datasets across more than 70 agencies.

On Aug. 31, the Illinois state Board of Elections put out a disquieting statement. Staff became aware of a breach to their Voter Registration System database over a month and a half prior in which approximately 700 voter records were viewed and up to 86,000 others were “strongly suspected to have been viewed.” The breach exposed voters’ names, addresses and dates of birth at the least. Phone numbers, email addresses, drivers license numbers and the last four digits of Social Security numbers could also have been viewed. “The cyber-intrusion was a complex attack, involving thousands of lines of encoded inquiries,” the release read. Illinois wasn’t alone — hackers also struck Arizona, with news organizations reporting that Russia was suspected.

The Department of Health has removed a research dataset based on Medicare and PBS claims from its open data portal after a team of Melbourne researchers pointed out that practitioner details could be decrypted. The government today advised that the data was withdrawn yesterday following “an alert made in the public interest” by researcher Dr Vanessa Teague from Melbourne University. Teague told the department that she and her colleagues had analysed 10 percent of the linked dataset and found it was possible to decrypt some of the service provider ID numbers attached to doctors.

The world has seen the advent of the web, of e-business, digital marketing and the digital business. “So what’s next?” asks Prentice. “This is algorithmic business and its where companies should be aiming for now.” Data is driving many of the changes in business, particularly its inexorable growth. Creators of a new open data app are encouraging the public to take advantage of tools created through government data, particularly through their Ecological Marine Units (EMU) Map, which uses National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data to map the physical and chemical properties of the world’s oceans. “We really want people to explore what we’ve done through this app,” said Dawn Wright, chief scientist at Esri, the company that developed the app along with the U.S. Geological Survey, academics, and nonprofit partners. The app is available online and requires no special software to use. However, Wright said that one of the main reasons to use it is that the data is derived from NOAA data sets collected using taxpayer money.

The White House and NASA have partnered with a host of technology giants including Google, Amazon and Microsoft to “harness the data revolution” as a means to develop climate resilience alongside the World Resources Institute (WRI). The Partnership for Resilience and Preparedness (PREP) was launched on Thursday (22 September), to aid communities, businesses and investors in utilising data to manage climate risks and improve climate-related forecasting and planning. “Understanding the threats posed by climate change and extreme weather are critical to protecting people, homes, businesses and livelihoods. Data must be part of the solution,” WRI’s vice president for science and research Janet Ranganathan said.
