A fresh light has been thrown on the issue of data sharing in the development of smart places, with the publication of a draft document on the issue by national standards body the BSI. Under the functional label of PAS 183:20176, it provides a guide to setting up a decision-making framework for sharing data and information services, and moves beyond the BSI standard that appeared in 2014 focused on the model for data in a smart city concept. According Professor Jacqui Taylor (pictured), technical author of the report, it is aimed at providing insights to help readers understand the possibilities in data sharing. “This PAS could be a key to unlocking the business models for smart cities,” she told UKAuthority.

Pune: Developers of mobile applications, researchers, students, and citizens can now access authentic data about Pune at the click of a mouse. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has come up with a special ‘open data website’ where civic data will be uploaded in different file formats. This data bank is free of cost to the citizens.The PMC launched the Pune City Open Data Store facility, opendata.punecorporation.org, in a special programme at Bal Gandharva Auditorium on Sunday.”The project has been designed on the lines of Union Government’s Open Government Data platform. It can be used to develop digital solutions for civic issues and real time data will be available,” PMC commissioner Kunal Kumar told reporters.

LOS ANGELES – Grindr, in partnership with HackerNest, have announced that Vicc Alexander and Marlon Lopez are the Grand Prize winners of their seven-week Hackathon, Hack4Equality, dedicated to solving crucial issues within the LGBTQ community. The winning concept, presented at the live demo day final, hosted at Grindr’s Los Angeles headquarters, aspires to end public LGBTQ discrimination with their application, LooBot. LooBot connects those without wifi-access to gender-neutral restrooms and charging outlets nearby simply by sending a text to (424) 785-2026. Loobot was awarded prizes totaling $40,000, which will go towards expanding the service by integrating shelters, housing accessibility and soup kitchens. The concept also won the LGBTQ Homelessness category prize.

From March through June 2016, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the nonprofit Center for Open Data Enterprise ran a series of four Open Data Roundtables. These events brought together a total of 290 experts from inside and outside of government. Their challenge was to find ways to maximize the value and accessibility of open government data – publicly available data that anyone can use and republish for business, research, or the public good. The Roundtables were designed to highlight best practices and case studies, explore innovative solutions to data challenges, and lead to new connections and partnerships.

Embracing technology to provide various services to residents, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday declared the launch of Open Data portal that would provide free access to real-time civic data for all, including commercial service providers. The PMC would launch the Pune City Open Data Store facility, opendata.pune corporation.com, on October 2. “The Pune Data Store endorses Union Government’s Open Government Data platform. It would be free and open data-sharing portal where anyone — citizen, business owner, researcher or developer — can access data relating to the city. The site would provide data sets to help understand the city and develop solution to Pune’s problems,” said municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar.

The Commerce Department has tens of thousands of datasets, thanks in part to its data-rich agencies such as the Census Bureau, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Although the information is highly sought after, it hasn’t always been easy to get or use. The Commerce Data Usability Project changed that. Launched in January, CDUP is a collection of online data tutorials that introduce a problem, explain how data solves it and provide step-by-step instructions on accessing data and making it actionable. That approach cuts the time it takes users to collect and process Commerce’s information from months to moments.

Is open data the cure for cancer? Less than 5 percent of American adults living with  cancer will be part of a clinical trial, according to the American Cancer Society. Michael Balint, a presidential innovation fellow working with the National Cancer Institute, says that low percentage is caused by the perception of being a guinea pig, negative marketing and misinformation sharing.
