One of the reasons I enjoy writing about technology, particularly data technology, is because I believe it can illuminate real-world problems. So you can imagine my frustration when I tried to fact-check the conflicting data on Ebola’s infection rates. One article claimed a case fatality rate of 25 percent, while another cited 90 percent. I checked and, surprisingly, both are right — well, sort of. WHO states: “The average EVD case fatality rate is around 50%. Case fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks.” This week, WHO bumped that fatality rate to 70 percent. The reason the numbers range so widely is simple: West African health care systems and reporting structures aren’t advanced enough to properly track it, according to the CDC.

Data on coyotes, cemeteries and energy consumption helps grow the open data catalogue of the town of Oakville The open data initiative of the south western Ontario town of Oakville is gaining momentum. The town’s online data catalogue grew last week with the inclusion of new data sets on coyotes, cemeteries and energy consumption  at town facilities. The additonal information boosted the catalogue’s contents to 40 data sets, according to city officials. Open data is defined as information that is available in a format that can be read by a computer, and is made available for anyone to use, transform or republish without restriction. “I am pleased that the town can facilitate the growing open data usage taking place in our community, said Rob Burton, mayor of Oakville.

The NSW government is calling on the state’s best developers to help design apps to boost government service delivery, using open data. Finance and services minister, Dominic Perrottet, said citizens deserve state of the art services and we’d like to co-design them with the best and brightest minds in the private sector. “There is a real wealth of agency data that developers will be able to draw upon and it will be exciting to see what they deliver. “This isn’t our data, it’s your data – and you can help us make the best use of it for the benefit of citizens across this state.” There is a total of $45,000 in prize money up for grabs in apps4nsw competition, for the most progressive and innovative ideas.

The Town of Oakville’s online data catalogue was expanded last week to include datasets on cemeteries, coyotes, and energy consumption at town facilities — part of an ongoing initiative to support local economic development and government transparency through open data. The town’s data catalogue now contains 40 datasets. The newly-released energy consumption data was specifically requested by the developer community and includes overall usage data and building area-specific detail. “I’m pleased that the town can facilitate the growing open data usage taking place in our community,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. “Our partnership with Silicon Halton is expanding the conversation about the great things we can accomplish together when developers get creative with the town’s open data.

Releasing data to the public can help to unleash innovation and generate huge benefits. In the public sector using citizen’s personal information allows the government to deliver services proactively and with greater efficiency. However, the use of citizen data raises several points of concern for whether current safeguards are adequate for preventing misuse. One area where the use of open data deeply affects society is in the criminal justice system. A hallmark of big data is personalization and segmentation tools that parse out demographic information such as gender, ethnicity, class, age, personality, habits, and geographical attributes to group and profile users. These profiles are then used to inform actions and decisions.

Open Data Kosovo (ODK) is a foundation supporting the idea that freely available and transparent data allows for innovative solutions to be implemented, while exposing the public to nascent and enabling technologies. It’s based on the work of logical digital actors and contributes to stimulate a vibrant tech scene. The initiative aims to fill the gap between Kosovo’s openness to technology (just recently the World Internet Stats report showed that Kosovo has the highest Internet usage rate in the Balkans) and a couple of days they already started acting through workshops and activities around Kosovo, starting with participating in a series of events organised by UNDP Kosovo in Prishtina, Prizren, and Gjakova relating to innovation in Kosovo.
