Writing my post about AI and summoning the demon led me to re-read a number of articles on Cathy O’Neil’s excellent mathbabe blog. I highlighted a point Cathy has made consistently: if you’re not careful, modelling has a nasty way of enshrining prejudice with a veneer of “science” and “math.” Cathy has consistently made another point that’s a corollary of her argument about enshrining prejudice. At O’Reilly, we talk a lot about open data. But it’s not just the data that has to be open: it’s also the models. D’Abruzzo, who until recently ran the Philadelphia Police Department program to train cops as data scientists, liked to say: “If you’re in city government and you don’t have a drinking problem, you’re not trying hard enough.” But as much as the bureaucracy and “indentured servant pay” wore on him, he loved his job. “The only thing that kept me in Philly was that I loved what I was doing,” he said last week. D’Abruzzo, 33, of Hawthorne, whose self-deprecating and at times off-color humor made him well-loved at the department, left Philly this past weekend for Pittsburgh, his hometown. He’ll work for City Controller Michael Lamb, figuring out how city departments can best use their data (the city also launched an open data policy earlier this year).

If you own a licensed dog or cat in Toronto, there’s a good chance its name is Charlie or Max. They topped both lists recently released by the city of the 25 most popular names for the two species. The latest data show there were 90,154 licensed dogs and cats in Toronto. The city says 1,450 of them are named Charlie, while 1,368 are Max. City bylaws require all dogs and cats owned in Toronto to be licensed and wearing a tag, although not all pet owners comply. The city collects and compiles the names of licensed pets, revealing some intriguing trends about what we name our companion animals. The stats reveal that besides Charlie and Max, Tiger, Smokey, Tigger, Lucy and Lucky also prove to be common cat names. Meanwhile, dog owners most often choose Buddy, Bailey, Bella and Molly.

I’ve been asked by a number of people what I think the “tech platform” should be for parties running for the City of Vancouver’s November 2014 municipal election. I feel under-equipped to tease out the intricacies of economic and civic policy, so I can only speak to what I’ve observed, what my gut says. At the same time, I’m not sure what municipal-level policies can actually do for tech ecosystems, other than many of the things that anyone working in any industry wants from a livable, vibrant city. Can the City of Vancouver help with increasing the salaries that private tech companies pay? Finally, some of the thoughts below are the sort of things I want from all of our Canadian government systems in being modern, efficient, and making effective use of technology.

Plans to introduce legislation into the state’s law for ensuring government departments make their data freely available to the public Queensland is pushing forward in making its government data open to the public, with assistant minister to the Premier, Ray Stevens, planning to introduce legislation next year that will cement this for the long term. California startup VIMOC Technologies has launched Landscape-Computing to provide smart cities with a scalable API, sensor-data-driven platform. Currently testing the platform in Palo Alto, Calif., and Newcastle, Australia, Landscape-Computing uses a modular design and edge processing technologies to avoid overloading bandwidth with the weight of sensor data that, until now, has been a significant barrier to the design and deployment of smart cities applications. In a move that echoes Elon Musk’s opening up of the source code for the Tesla vehicle to help grow the electric car industry, VIMOC has open sourced the sensor hardware technology so that cities, technology manufacturers and potential startups can build new sensor-based hardware products that can work with the API platform.

As part of the Brighton Digital Festival in September this year, we used Emotable to analyse more than 400,000 Tweets linked to the city – either via a mention of Brighton, commonly used hashtags or Twitter handles that we knew to be people in the city. Emotable then tagged the emotional content of each Tweet and classified it in real-time. Almost 70% of all tweets with emotional content were happy. That baseline is significantly higher than other topics we have looked at with the Emotable engine. The full emotional profile of Brighton that we constructed also included 13% sad, 9% surprised or excited, 8% scared and 7% angry tweets (note that the total of these is more than 100% because some tweets contain multiple emotions). No other emotion comes anywhere near ‘happy’.

The identity is directly based on one of the Foundation’s landmark projects – the Global Open Data Index. This project looks at how open countries around the world are about sharing data using a series of metrics such as Government budgets or election results. If a country is ‘open’ in a particular category it gets a green marker and if it is ‘closed’ it gets a red one. For the foundation identity, Johnson Banks took all these red markers to form an inner ring. The green markers then form and outer ring. Each dataset relates to one of the 72 countries in the original survey. Johnson Banks creative director Michael Johnson says the scheme was nicknamed “data earth”. He adds: The symbol is designed to work on multiple levels, as an ‘earth’, as an eye, and as an ‘O’ for ‘Open’.
