Here’s how IBM’s new West African lab is using open data and other technologies to help Sierra Leone and Nigerian governments contain the disease. The spread of the Ebola virus has been devastating for West Africa. Now, locals in Sierra Leone are working together to contain the outbreak by reporting their concerns directly to the government, thanks to a citizen engagement and analytics system developed by IBM’s new research lab in Africa. Jonathan Auerbach, a Ph.D. candidate at Columbia University, is challenging the “one rat per person” claim by delving into open data, in this case the Department of Health’s trove of 311 calls for rodent sightings. The claim that New York City is home to 8 million rats — or one for every human resident — is probably a tall tale, according to research by a Columbia University statistician, Reuters reports. In truth, the city’s rat population is probably closer to 2 million, said Jonathan Auerbach, a Columbia doctoral student who wrote an essay on the subject published in Significance magazine. According to MSN.com, the “one rat per person” claim stems from a study of rats conducted in England by W.R. Boelter and published in 1909 under the title The Rat Problem.

If you walk through Hyde Park this month, you’ll notice some odd-shaped cylinders strapped to streetlamps. No, they’re not the latest city cameras out to catch you running (maybe) a red light; they are new data trackers that may soon be rolling out across Chicago. The project is called the Array of Things, and it comes from the Computation Institute, a collaboration between the University of Chicago and Argonne Labs. Twenty nodes scattered around the U. of C. will monitor temperature, humidity, light, sound, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and motion. The senior fellow leading the project, Charlie Catlett, describes them as Fitbits for the city—tracking Chicago’s health. The project is great news for data geeks, but it has the potential to help everyday Chicagoans, too.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is leveraging data visualization tools to help connect jobseekers to jobs in Virginia. Internally, the agency is also using visualizations to improve transit system service delivery, powered by Tableau a data visualization tool. The agency first started using Tableau to analyze operations and crash events, and optimize the deployment of DOT assets. However, last summer, the Governor challenged state agencies to find new ways of using government data to improve outcomes for Virginia residents. Using Tableau, VDOT built an application that connects jobseekers to technology careers and resources.
