With painted brick walls, exposed pipes and laptop workstations shaped like pingpong paddles, the workspace known as Hub LA in downtown’s trendy Arts District embodies the disruptive, start-up ethos. That’s partly why Mayor Eric Garcetti recently used the venue as a backdrop to announce one of his latest initiatives to move city government “into the modern era” by embracing technology and risk-taking. Garcetti — who calls himself a “high-tech mayor” — has created an open-data website, launched an app that connects people to city services and appointed the city’s first chief innovation technology officer. Earlier this month, the mayor presented the first Civic Innovation Award to city employees who replaced paper-based maps with a digital app.

The Open Data Discourse: Street Safety Challenge invites creative responses to open, public data from the city of Cambridge about traffic accidents (including pedestrian, cyclist, and motor vehicles) and encourages participants to use their talents and skills in data visualization, performance art, design, and story-telling to inform public policies. Entries that advance the public safety policy discussion and are inspired by the open data made available will be accepted in any form, limited only by the creativity of the participants. Our hope is that Open Data Discourse will generate creative policy solutions and help Cambridge make data-driven decisions.

For civic technologists and the data savvy, New York City’s Open Data Portal has been a blessing. After years of limited transparency, City data, which is extremely useful for solving civic problems, is now out in the open to a much larger degree than ever before. But members of the New York City Council, who are the front lines of constituent services, have not been actively using the portal. Most council members are not software engineers or data scientists; with only one known exception (Council Member Ben Kallos), they don’t write software code. While none of those are requirements to use the Open Data Portal, having a minimum understanding of what the portal offers and how to use it would help council members and their staffs access the wealth of information available.

Every business knows its most important asset is the customer. Businesses are constantly polling them, listening to them and acting on their demands. Modern government, successful government, is no different. Is it fair to say that a government’s most important asset is its citizen? If it is, then for public policy to be relevant, respected and successful, the government and policy-makers must constantly be monitoring its customer/citizen. Just like business, government change is driven when the customer (citizen) changes the way they wish to do business. In today’s world of technology, the majority of customers and citizens and especially our youth are equipped with smartphones and other communication devices. Our youth are the citizens and policy-makers of tomorrow.

The Interior minister, Ousman Sonko, Wednesday announced that the government is bracing up for the commencement of what he called an economic census to take place soon, the objective of which he said, is to provide key statistics for economic development. He made the disclosure at a local hotel in Kololi while presiding on behalf of the Finance and Economic Affairs minister at the end of a two-day forum, convened by the Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS). The event was held as part of activities marking African Statistics Day on the theme: “Open Data for Accountability and Inclusiveness.” Commenting on the upcoming census, Sonko elucidated: “I therefore solicit the cooperation of all business establishments in this national exercise”.

Back in October, the Washington Post offered some blog coverage of Suby Raman’s first big data and the arts post. While the dramatic headline made it sound like Raman had written a death knell for opera, what he’d actually done was taken reams of detailed data about the Metropolitan Opera’s performances and analyzed it for trends. Because he’s a composer, he knew what to look for in the data and what would matter to people. Because he’s a programmer, he knew how to handle the big data set itself. In that data, he found a lot of really interesting stories to tell–not about the death of opera itself, but about how the Metropolitan Opera has been producing more and more works by dead composers. As the repertoire has solidified, the average age of a composition has gone pretty far up.

We’re pleased to announce the launch of a free new service for the people of Leeds, and a new chapter in The City Talking story. Find My Bin Day is a free service that uses data released by Leeds City Council, through Leeds Data Mill, to help Leeds residents keep a track of their bin collection dates. It exists to ensure no person in Leeds need suffer the trauma of a forgotten bin collection! We launched it today under our our League of Streets brand, which we’ll be using as a vehicle to do stuff with Open Data from local sources. We’ve got all sorts of plans and ideas for services and tools that we hope the people of Leeds will love and, as the name suggests, we’ve also got some ideas about how to make it all just a tiny bit competitive – as is the measure of a true Loiner.

This weekend is active again, especially for the girls interested in technology. They will have the chance to attend a fantastic event organized jointly with Girls Coding Kosova, UNDP and Open Data Kosovo. The workshops have started from 10:00 at the American University in Kosovo, while for every participant amongst many things there is also food, drinks and even hoodies. The organizers have agreed also to provide certificates to the participants as well. Based on the joint agreement between the organizers the schedule for the participants includes: The first day of the workshop was quite interesting with a full house at the venue, while the second day is expected to continue with the same intensity and even more energy towards open data.
