This Thanksgiving holiday, we’re asking you to join Sunlight in helping create open data about your local government. Over the last year and a half, we have been working hard to architect and implement new tools and data specifications to work with state and municipal data; ultimately, we want to make it easier for you to better know how your local-level elected officials are creating laws that will affect you in your hometown. This is all part of our new Open Civic Data project. Imagine getting a push notification letting you know when your city council is taking up legislation to improve bike lanes in your neighborhood, and then being able to easily call or email your council member to weigh in on the ordinance.

Today, Treasury Board President Tony Clement announced the launch of the second national Canadian Open Data Experience appathon – CODE 2015. The event, hosted by XMG Studio and designed to accelerate innovation, will take place over the weekend of International Open Data Day, February 20-22, 2015. Students, tech developers, and anyone wanting to build an app are being challenged to turn valuable federal data into useful and user-friendly apps. The winning teams will be awarded prizes from private sector sponsors, totaling $40,000. To fully harness the power of open data, the Government of Canada is releasing data into the hands of entrepreneurs and other open data enthusiasts through open.canada.ca, Canada’s newly enhanced Open Government Portal.

Why build your own particle accelerator when you can borrow CERN’s? The home of the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland, has started putting data from its experiments online for anyone to use. They hope it could fuel education, art and perhaps even physics discoveries. “It’s very important that we keep this data open and usable,” says Kati Lassila-Perini of the CMS experiment at the LHC, which has uploaded 27 terabytes of data to the new CERN Open Data Portal. A web interface lets you visualise the paths of particles created by collisions at the LHC, or you can work directly with the data for more serious analysis. Other LHC experiments have uploaded smaller data sets for educational purposes, allowing budding particle physicists to try their hand at massive-scale physics.

The Sunlight Foundation, a non-profit focused on improving government transparency has launched its Open Civic Data project. The project is now recruiting individuals to volunteer to “liberate” local municipal data. The ultimate goal of the project will be to provide a notification platform for individuals who wish to stay informed about the activities of their local government. Sunlight Foundation has launched several tools to go with the project which will allow residents to upload local information, as well as an API for more technical users. “One of our biggest focuses was to create a system where non-technical users are able to contribute to the data collection effort in an easy and effective way.

During a month-long hack-a-thon, open through December 30, the public is being invited to put their creative talents to use by engaging with policymakers in solving Cambridge traffic and public safety issues. A group called Open Data Discourse (ODD) is organizing the Street Safety Challenge. Its goal is to start a discussion on how to make Cambridge a safer place for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. According to data from the Cambridge Open Data portal, there have been 6,340 traffic incidents involving cars, pedestrians, and cyclists between 2010 and 2013, equating to roughly 176 accidents a month. The data reveals the location of each accident; whether a car, bike, or pedestrian was involved; along with the date and the time of day it occurred.

Dimension Data has established a managed Cloud platform (MCP) in Canberra, purpose-built for the Australian government. The ICT solutions and services provider said the MCP would be the first large-scale platform in Canberra designed solely for the government and will enable agencies to rapidly respond to meet community needs, departmental policies and future advances in technology. The Canberra MCP is housed in a new TIA 942 design-compliant facility, under final construction by Canberra Data Centres, with full services to come on stream early next year. Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull, said Cloud infrastructure such as the MCP enables the government to benefit from cost savings, improved efficiencies and increased staff productivity offered by Cloud computing.

Most countries in the world measure their poverty using an absolute threshold, or in other words, a fixed standard of what households should be able to count on in order to meet their basic needs. A few countries, however, have chosen to measure their poverty using a relative threshold, that is, a cutoff point in relation to the overall distribution of income or consumption in a country. The chart above shows the differences between relative and absolute poverty headcount ratios for countries that have measured both. You can select other countries from the drop down list, but for example, you can see that Romania switched from measuring poverty in absolute terms to measuring poverty in relative terms in 2006.  Absolute poverty headcount ratios steadily declined from 35.
