Carlos Saavedra looked at his parents for inspiration during a national open data competition. With friend Jason Ernst, they created newRoots, an app helping immigrants — before they’ve arrived in Canada – determine which city to settle in based on their background and credentials by “looking at unemployment rates, looking at labour industries, cultural group populations, and really determining the probability of you being successful in different cities across Canada,” said Saavedra, 27. The Kitchener-Waterloo resident said his parents hail from Poland and Ecuador. Now he’s taking the application to the next level, “connecting you to other service providers as well … YMCAs and United Ways, immigration consultants, immigration lawyers,” said Saavedra.

The city’s new chief analytics officer Amen Ra Mashariki emphasized the importance of data access and sharing data between agencies in his first public remarks Wednesday afternoon. Mashariki, just three days into his position, was a keynote speaker at the City College University Transportation Research Center’s symposium on transportation technology, and focused on the role of “big data” in transportation research and policy. He said that the data analytics office would be “extremely dedicated to opening data, whenever and however we can open data.” In introducing Mashariki, Matthew Daus, the former T.L.C. commissioner and now a distinguished lecturer at the center, spoke about the importance of being able to access government data.

For the first time, output data from Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments is freely available to the public in an open access mode. LHC is the largest and most powerful particle accelerator worldwide and is located at CERN, the European Organization for nuclear research. Want to find out how a community is changing? Look at its architecture. The facade of a storefront might change, and with it, its services. An apartment may be raised, and consequently, bring congestion. This ambiguity has bothered the city of Palo Alto, Calif., until just recently when it unveiled some changes of its own. On Nov. 10 the municipality, known for its Silicon Valley roots, announced the deployment of BuildingEye, a platform that maps building permits, planning applications and other construction-related activity through GIS data. Officials calculate the software service will be a boon for staff, often flooded with calls, and for residents, who want to know about local development. “We definitely had a need,” said Palo Alto’s Senior Engineer Roland Rivera.

European CIOs looking to integrate applications across public and private clouds will soon have a new option with a data orchestration service from Deutsche Telekom and Informatica. With the growing popularity of cloud-based applications, the potential for data fragmentation has also increased, because apps running in-house aren’t going away. To help enterprises address this problem, Deutsche Telekom’s T-Systems unit has joined forces with integration software company Informatica. The result is a hosted service designed to let companies integrate applications running in public and private clouds and on-premises environments. It lets enterprises move data between a database, CRM system or Hadoop-based big data application running on-premise and ones running in the cloud.

After years of prep work, the City released information on a regional open data website, Nov. 19. The portal, www.calgaryregionopendata.ca, was created in collaboration with the Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP) and other CRP member municipalities. “We are trying to give people a single avenue to access data,” said Corey Halford, the City’s data services team leader. “Open data is a principle and practice where non-confidential government data is available to anyone to use, reuse and distribute at no charge.” This will be a big change from Airdrie’s traditional way of releasing data, explained Halford, explaining everyone has free access to the information, which was previously arduous and costly to obtain.
