Many politicians these days believe in the power of the Internet. More specifically, they believe in the power of social media. However, there is one problem. These politicians have no idea how they should wield this double-edged sword — Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, YouTube and a dozen more platforms popular with their various electorates. Furthermore, when campaigning, they might not know or have the tools required to better understand real-time sentiment and discover where voters are getting relevant information from. Ko Wen-je, the newly-elected Mayor of Taipei, might have been one such politician until he met Taiwan-based social media analytics startup Qsearch.

Socrata is growing like crazy. The Seattle startup, which develops cloud-based offerings for open data governments, has grown from 75 employees in January to 140 in its Pioneer Square office today. It has also enjoyed 100 percent year-over-year revenue growth for the past three years. Now, it has some serious venture capital backing. We first reported Socrata’s $30 million round last week, and now the company is today officially announcing the funding. The Series C round was led by Sapphire Ventures (formerly SAP Ventures) with participation from existing investors like OpenView Venture Partners, Morgenthaler Ventures, and Frazier Technology Partners. Total funding for the eight-year-old company is now at $55 million. Socrata is clearly having some serious success as of late.

A network of school weather stations in Peterborough has become the front line in a radical council ICT strategy, linking cutting edge tech trends including open data, the internet of things, “ultrafast” broadband, smart cities and cloud computing, the council’s ICT chief has told UKAuthority.com. Peterborough has been gaining attention this year for moving almost all its data and software systems to cloud hosting and management, much of it using public cloud services such as Box and Amazon Web Services (AWS). In September the council published a technology strategy for the period 2014-19 restating its aspiration to create “government as a platform” using modular and cloud-based systems.

Open data portals have been popping up across the country, giving the public online access to a wide array of government data sets. The movement, largely led by the federal government, is slowly getting traction, with municipalities and provinces opening up their books. The information ranges from real-time weather conditions to municipalities’ 311 service calls to the number of dairy cows in each province. But why does this matter to entrepreneurs? Tony Clement, Treasury Board President, called open data Canada’s 21st century natural resource. “There’s a lot of data out there that can be used in new ways to make people’s lives easier,” Mr. Clement told Startup Day on the Hill delegates in a panel discussion at Château Laurier in Ottawa on Nov. 26.

Agency aims to rollout consolidated database as live service in 2015 to create world’s first national open register of business information Companies House said it is working to switch a new consolidated database designed to open up all data it holds on UK enterprises from private to public beta ahead of attempts to launch as a live service next year.
