The White House launched a website last week that is designed to collect open data on disasters, says a Dec. 15 Office of Science and Technology Policy blog post. Disasters.Data.Gov acts as a “public resource to foster collaboration and the continual improvement of disaster-related open data, free tools and new ways to empower first responders, officials and survivors in the wake of a disaster,” says the office. The website was first previewed at the White House Innovation for Disaster Response and Recovery Initiative Demo Day back in August. And now OSTP is calling on tech innovators to help figure out the best way to leverage real-time sensors, open data, social media and other tools the reduce the number of fatalities during a disaster.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and chairman of Dubai Executive Council, has issued a resolution to create the Dubai Open Data Committee as part of the emirate’s Smart City initiative. The resolution aims to strike a balance between making data available and maintaining data security in line with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s plan to transform Dubai into a smart city. The new resolution also aims to provide open access data – aligned with global practice – to ensure that data is readily available for its Dubai audience, while enhancing the experience of sharing and receiving information, a statement said.

In a bid to make its websites more friendly and transparent to citizens, the Centre will soon migrate its websites to open source and making the contents available in local languages as well. This is part of the ‘Digital India’ campaign and a step forward to improve Government websites, a senior official at Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), told BusinessLine. He said the look and feel of the websites would be much better and translation of contents will be available from English to a local language or vice-versa. “We have already started the framework to migrate all the Central and State Governmental Departments’ websites and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) is working on a fast track on this.

In addition to the sharing economy, the Internet of Things and mobility, we now look into data analytics, robots, beacons and that increasingly elusive thing, privacy. Big data, or the need to draw meaningful insights from multiple sources of data through analytics, has consumed a big part of companies’ 2014 priorities and will only increase as more and more sensors begin to collect and measure more data around the world. One of the big challenges for 2015, will continue to be finding people with analytics skills who also have a deep vertical knowledge of their industry, says David Mellers, Intel’s enterprise solutions manager, ANZ.

Taipei’s mayor-elect Ko Wen-je (pictured) is already delivering on his election promise of a more open government by consulting businessmen, researchers and community leaders to pick senior members of his government. FutureGov spoke with Ben Jai, a member of this group of advisors, to learn how Ko is getting citizens to participate. “We’re not merely supporting his decisions,” Jai said. “We are part of the process that he uses to come up with a decision. Whenever there’s a policy issue, we either reactively or proactively gather our opinion and sometimes even go into implementation details, and submit them to Mayor Ko.” Ko, who takes office on 25 December, formed this group during his election campaign and refers to them as his “municipal advisors”.

The cities of Boston and Philadelphia have seen significant results from their open data initiatives. Bill Oates, CIO, City of Boston and Mark Headd, Chief Data Officer, City of Philadelphia speak on how they started and why their approach worked. Philadelphia began by opening up data around transportation because it impacts most citizens’ lives and many other cities were already doing good things with transit data. “We started out very modestly, and at first we really looked for the low-hanging fruit,” he said in this new case study “How Boston and Philadelphia have reestablished trust in government”.

City government’s most obscure commission assembled for the third time in its 25-year history Thursday. This week, social landlord Viridian Housing won the Housing Open Data Challenge for its ‘MoveMaker’ app – a piece of software that allows tenants  to swipe through a list of properties available to swap and connects them with home matches. Here Ed Wallace, Viridian’s, research & innovation manager, talks about the innovative programme… Think about dating and a situation we all recognise, the first encounter. It is uncomfortable and embarrassing, and if you lack the means or confidence to make a first move, then you will miss your opportunity. Technology and the advent of internet dating have turned this situation on its head (at least for the singletons among us). It puts people in control, approaching someone is easy and it is a lot less awkward.

A new online map of city parking zones aims to help motorists avoid parking tickets and software developers build helpful urban apps. Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza unveiled the map Thursday at the 1871 tech incubator, saying it should cut down on the “tuition of life” checks Chicagoans write in the form of $75 parking tickets from restricted zones. You can access the map here. At the heart of the problem was Chicago’s complex network of 1,429 active residential parking zones, many carved into smaller areas with unique restrictions, Mendoza said. She said the zones cover 20 percent of the city. “The No. 1 request we get from motorists is how do they get access to this map” of restricted parking zones, Mendoza said.
