Taipei’s mayor-elect Ko Wen-je (pictured) is already delivering on his election promise of a more open government by consulting businessmen, researchers and community leaders to pick senior members of his government. FutureGov spoke with Ben Jai, a member of this group of advisors, to learn how Ko is getting citizens to participate. “We’re not merely supporting his decisions,” Jai said. “We are part of the process that he uses to come up with a decision. Whenever there’s a policy issue, we either reactively or proactively gather our opinion and sometimes even go into implementation details, and submit them to Mayor Ko.” Ko, who takes office on 25 December, formed this group during his election campaign and refers to them as his “municipal advisors”.
