This year has seen some exciting new developments from the diabetes industry, particularly for continuous glucose monitoring. In February, Dexcom’s G4 Platinum CGMS was approved for pediatric indication and then, in November, they released their Software 505 update to the G4 Platinum (non-pediatric) receiver with an advanced algorithm being used in artificial pancreas research around the world. Also in November, J&J Animas finally received US FDA approval of their Animas Vibe Dexcom-integrated insulin pump that has been available in Europe since 2011 and will start shipping in January 2015. Another player in the CGMS business, Abbott Diabetes, received the CE Mark for their new FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring system in 2014. It was a good year for breaking new ground, too.

Agencies have made tremendous progress in the past six years on opening an ever-larger collection of government data. What started in some corners as a grudging post of whatever spreadsheet (or, worse, PDF) was readily available, mainly to appease the Obama administration, has grown into a truly rich ecosystem of valuable and usable data. “Usable” does not automatically mean “used,” however. Many agencies still struggle to determine what datasets are truly in demand and which ones effectively go into cold storage on Data.gov. And although “open by default” is an admirable policy, the reality of resource constraints mean that most agencies must triage their open-data efforts – hopefully in a way that moves the most valuable data to the front of the line.

Our Transparency Portal continues to be one of the most heavily trafficked sub-sections of our website. Earlier this year we held the first-of-its-kind Data Summit and for next, year, CA Fwd is upping the ante with regional data events leading up to 2015’s Summit during Sunshine Week. The Montgomery County government launched a website on Dec. 19 that allows residents to check on how the county spends money. At spendingMontgomery, taxpayers can browse on categories such as “the biggest spenders,” “payment details,” and “the most expensive items.” “The new spendingMontgomery initiative is a groundbreaking application of the open data vision, and I applaud the County Executive and his team for bringing it forward,” said Montgomery County Councilmember Hans Riemer. According to a press release, Riemer is the council’s lead member for digital government and the chief sponsor of the legislation that created an open data policy.

Thanks to a robust civic technology community and plenty of open data, New York City is home to several great civic apps. Citygram, created by civic hacker and open government group BetaNYC, uses 311 and crash data provided by the City to allow users to get personalized crash alerts for any area of the city. This year’s winner of the City-sponsored Big Apps competition, Heatseek, will use 311 data to create Cold Map, which will show where tenants without heat are located. They are also piloting a program which puts devices in some of those apartments to create automated temperature logs, something required to take action against landlords who refuse to fix the heat.

The federal information commissioner is investigating multiple cases where it appears that government departments aren’t releasing data in easy-to-read formats, even though the law requires it. The ongoing investigations, which are prompted by complaints from requesters, comes as the federal minister who oversees the access-to-information regime suggested some data couldn’t be released in easy-to-read formats, such as spreadsheets, over fears people may post “corrupt” information. In an interview with the Canadian Press, Treasury Board President Tony Clement couldn’t identify any incident where government information had been falsified. Neither could information commissioner Suzanne Legault’s office.

When Angelenos call City Hall for help, they have some basic expectations. They should be able to talk to a live person. They should be told how long, roughly, it will take to address the problem. And they should know that their requests will be handled with the same care and concern, whether they live on the Westside or Eastside, in the San Fernando Valley or South L.A. But a Times analysis of code enforcement complaints found that, in fact, the service they get depends heavily on where they live. In eastern Los Angeles, nearly a quarter of the complaints about illegal construction, trash and debris, zoning violations and similar code violations languished for at least three months without a response.
