No matter what happens in the data center over the next few years, whether it is software-defined networking, hyperscalability or a fully virtual data stack, it is comforting to know that the enterprise will come out the winner because infrastructure will be cheaper, more flexible and, in a word, better. This isn’t necessarily true for today’s crop of enterprise vendors, however. Fundamental changes like we are seeing now threaten to unleash entirely new concepts of what data is, where it ought to reside, and how best to leverage it. And some of these ideas might not conform to the business models of key suppliers. As I mentioned in a previous post, the biggest pain point going forward still looks to be in the server industry.

What’s on your IT wish list? StateTech posed the question to IT professionals in capacities across government. We didn’t restrict their answers but rather encouraged them to think outside the box, beyond a specific tool or technology. Below are some of their responses: Spending more time collaborating rather than finding reasons why it can’t be done tops Davis’ priority list. “We spend a lot of cycles defusing the hurdles one by one thrown in our way on why we can’t work together,” he said. He also wants to see security personnel engaged and embedded in all aspects of business and technology efforts. This is especially true in the application and software development lifecycle. “Engage security early and often” is his motto.

Clement admitted that the 31-year old Access to Information Act needs to be reviewed, but he says there’s not enough time before the next federal election, scheduled for October 2015. “Obviously, things are changing very rapidly in the information and information technology sector, so I think it is appropriate to (review the act),” Clement, whose party has been in power since 2006, said in a year-end interview with the Star. It’s not clear how long a “meaningful” review would take, because the act has not been substantially updated since its introduction in 1983. Clement drew criticism in November when the 2014 to 2016 phase of the so-called open government initiative — which he has personally championed for years — did not include plans to update the act.

An online regional data center will soon serve as the central place for finding such things as the top cause of death in Allegheny County, vacant properties in a particular neighborhood or checking on whether that guy you might hire is indeed a registered master plumber. And planners hope it paves the way for still-to-be created apps that will make that kind of information more useful, whether for crime maps or text alerts about trash pickup or recycling day. To that end, the city and county last week received a $1.8 million grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to fund the first 18 months of the joint effort to create the data portal that also will incorporate the expertise of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.

If you have lived in NYC for long enough, you have seen your fair share of local restaurants and bars come and go.  Losing a favorite weekend haunt can be frustrating.  But there always seem to be some long standing options that have toughed it out through good times and bad. To find these oldies-but-goodies, I turned to New York State’s open data website which has data on liquor licenses.  The data includes the last time the license was renewed, but also the start date of the license, giving us the age of the liquor license.  From that date, we can get at least a lower bound on the age of the business.  The oldest recorded NYC license in the dataset belongs to the Harmonie Club on E 60th St in the Upper East Side, though you have to be a member to enjoy a drink there.  It dates to 1933.

The federal information commissioner is investigating multiple cases where it appears that government departments aren’t releasing data in easy-to-read formats, even though the law requires it. The ongoing investigations, which are prompted by complaints from requesters, comes as the federal minister who oversees the access-to-information regime suggested some data couldn’t be released in easy-to-read formats, such as spreadsheets, over fears people may post “corrupt” information. In an interview with The Canadian Press, Treasury Board President Tony Clement couldn’t identify any incident where government information had been falsified. Neither could information commissioner Suzanne Legault’s office.

While it doesn’t accurately represent which establishments have been open the longest—bars changing hands, Prohibition and other factors automatically eliminate certain places—the map points out some interesting neighborhood features.

US stocks are poised to open higher on Tuesday after the biggest four-day rally in three years sent the S&P 500 to a new record high. Futures suggest both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Index are set to gain 0.1 per cent. Fuel for another day of stock market gains could well be found in the flurry of data due out this morning. First up are durable-goods orders and the third estimate of third-quarter gross domestic product – both of which come out at 8:30am EST. The market is forecasting GDP growth to be revised to 4.3 per cent from the previous estimate of 3.9 per cent. Then at 9am, the market will get FHFA home prices. This will be followed at 9:55am by the University of Michigan consumer confidence index.
