The UK government has launched a call for evidence of the potential benefits greater data sharing and open dating could bring to the banking industry. The move is intended to support the growth of Britain’s emerging “FinTech” (Financial Technology) and ensure customers are able to get the best deals from financial institutions. Whitehall claims that greater use of data can transform how people live their lives and it is already seeing advantages from using open data across public services in areas such as healthcare and education. A statement on GOV.UK says the government is working to discover whether open data can help create more competition in the banking sector and deliver better deals for customers as part of the long-term economic plan.

Good day, or “Goede dag as they say in Dutch.  And a good several days we experienced in the Netherlands at the 3rd Annual meeting of the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) partnership.  Although the tulips had not yet blossomed, the excitement about the accomplishments and vision for the GODAN partnership were in full bloom among all attendees. I recently accompanied Dr. Cathie Woteki, USDA Chief Scientist and Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics, to the GODAN meeting hosted by the Government of the Netherlands, along with Wageningen University.

The government produces petabytes of data every day and the administration is looking to strengthen the collection and analysis of that information and release more of it to the public. Included in the president’s 2016 budget proposal are several initiatives to increase access to data and improve the government’s evidence-based decision making. “The administration is committed to continuing cost-effective investment in federal statistical programs in order to build and support agencies’ capacity to incorporate evidence and evaluation analyses into budget, management and policy decisions,” the budget reads.

One of the challenges of the explosion of data sets is data quality. As the quantity of data grows inside organisation be that organically, bought in or Open Data, ensuring that data is accurate is a time consuming problem. Over the last year, companies such as Trillium and Experian have been competing to deliver data quality platforms to enable companies to clean up their data to get reliable and trustworthy results. Trillium has now taken the decision that offering data cleansing and data quality solutions is not enough. To meet customer demand it has launched its own Trillium Cloud to deliver Data Quality as a Service (DQaaS). This move gives Trillium an edge over bigger competitors who have yet to build their own cloud platforms but only if they can deliver.

The Dallas Museum of Art and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art are among 14 institutions around the country cited by the Smithsonian American Art Museum this week in building a shared and searchable online database that, according to a story in the Washington Post, “could spur research and scholarship about American art.” Here is the Post story right here. The Post reports that the Smithsonian “received a grant from the Andrew M. Mellon Foundation to create the American Art Collective to expand the project to other museums.” “Art museums share a commitment to helping audiences of all ages experience, learn about, appreciate and enjoy art — thus our missions also include promoting access to our collections and research,” SAAM director Elizabeth Broun said in a statement.

At night in Barcelona, Gaudi’s Parc Guell lights up, and the little restaurants in Las Ramblas hop with energy. People move around, catch cabs, tweet thoughts, take pictures, laugh with friends. Aside from the laughter, these other evening activities can leave a data trace that researcher Mar Santamaria Varas, architect Pablo Martínez Díez, and engineer Jordi Bari Corberó have used to create 16 beautiful maps of the city. The trio’s atNight project offers a fresh presentation of social media activity and open data collected across Barcelona after dark. They hope the project leads to insights about when, where, and how city folks interact with their environment—and perhaps even helps urban planners design the city more intuitively. But the images can be enjoyed in their own right, too.

Confirming weeks of speculation, Steve Lohr of The New York Times reports that FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is going to “propose regulating Internet service like a public utility” as a telecommunications service under Title II of the Communications Act, but they will take a “light-touch approach” to applying that decision. The actual proposal from Wheeler to his fellow commissioners is expected tomorrow. Wheeler also has given the cities of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Wilson, North Carolina a preemption allowing them to ignore state laws preventing them from building their own broadband networks, reports Jason Koebler for Motherboard.

Governments around California and across the nation are releasing vast troves of public data, making government more transparent than ever before. As the open government movement gains momentum, advocates argue that open data has the potential to help governments do much more than increase transparency and accountability. At CA Fwd’s recent Long Beach Regional Data Forum, we spoke with Abhi Nemani, L.A.’s Chief Data Officer, about how governments can generate more value from the data they’re already releasing. Cape Town – There was much fanfare when the city council launched its open data portal, which it said would “take transparency to the next level” by allowing residents to gain access to local government information. But Code for South Africa, an NGO of computer geeks whose goal is it to “promote the release of data to improve lives and empower people to make informed choices”, has said that having experimented with it, the open portal is “mediocre”. Adi Eyal, director of Code for South Africa, said it appeared the city had simply put all its data that was already available elsewhere into one place. “I could go onto the treasury site for instance and get the budget there anyway, so the open portal is a little underwhelming.

The city of Phoenix’s website now hosts coding that provides real-time tracking data for buses and light rail. That data is free for developers to use in designing mobile apps and websites, allowing them to create programs that track the movements of public transportation in real-time. “[Members of the development community] want data in a way in which they can easily access and use,” said Rob Sweeney, assistant chief information officer with the city’s information-technology services. Phoenix adopted its open data policy last July after the city council approved a proposal from the public information office.
