The Ordnance Survey (OS) wants to make it easier for developers to use the its mapping data and has affirmed its commitment to supporting the open data movement. OS OpenMap is described as the “most detailed” open data mapping product available and will be released to the development community at the end of March. OpenMap is a street level vector dataset containing an “enhanced” level of building detail, extended naming of roads and identifies key sites such as hospital and schools. The OS says the map will provide an ideal backdrop map for integrating, visualising and analysing other open datasets. It is targeted at both the public and private sectors and the OS claims it can power a host of new desktop, web and mpbile applications and services.

Big Data is a massively popular trend, but like many pioneering technologies there are confusions on the best methods to benefit from future growth. In my previous article I discussed the merits of Big Data, and touched on a couple potential investment options. One of the most attractive investment options in my eyes is Hortonworks (NASDAQ:HDP). The company had its initial public offering in December and is already trading 53% above its initial price. Even though the stock is up a sizable amount, I believe there are more gains to be had if you invest in Hortonworks now. In June 2011, Hortonworks was spun-off as a standalone company from Yahoo’s Hadoop engineering team.

The first day of IBM InterConnect 2015 was busy. There were a lot of announcements, predictably around cloud, with many of them linked to each other. One announcement was IBM DataWorks which IBM is positioning as a tool to help companies clean their data for analytics. The initial reaction to the announcement is that IBM is preparing to take on companies such as Experian who are offering their own data cleansing platforms and cloud solution but that is not the case. What IBM  DataWorks is designed to do is enable users to carry out a number of steps to clean, reduce and prepare their data for inclusion in any multiple dataset analytics. Regular analytics users will be scratching their heads at this announcement because they can already do data cleansing on their data sets.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) is inviting feedback on a draft Western Australian Whole of Government Open Data Policy that seeks to tap an under-utilised resource amid budget constraints. According to the draft WA Whole of Government Open Data Policy, data remains a relatively untapped resource that could be used to stimulate greater sharing and access to information to support evidence-based decision making in the public sector; and increase the openness and transparency of government and its processes.

The idea of sharing St. Catharines government data in a free, easy-to-read format took a step forward Monday night. City councillors unanimously voted to create a task force to look into adopting an Open Data initiative. “Basically, every other government in Canada is going down this road,” said St. Patrick’s Coun. Mat Siscoe, adding there are lots of volunteers willing to help. “The reality is, there are a lot of programmers chomping at the bit to do this for us.” Siscoe said communities that open data streams see more community engagement. The concept would see city data — such as transit routes and stops, locations of bike lanes or parking meters — freely available to everyone in readable file formats.

Ordnance Survey has launched an open data mapping database, OpenMap, in a move to boost economic growth and digital innovation. The database will provide street level-detail geospatial data on both mobile and web platforms, and the organisation has invited developers to use the open datasets to build new products and enhance existing apps. Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills said: “Access to open data will open up job opportunities. Britain is already a world-leader at designing and making innovative products. But we need to keep investing and supporting our technology businesses to stay ahead.

A record number of 125 apps were created using federal open datasets as part of the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE), a 48-hour hackathon held between February 20th – February 22nd, 2015 across the country. CODE challenged innovators from coast to coast to coast to unleash their creativity to solve some of Canada’s most pressing issues by using open data sets available at Open.canada.ca. Jointly envisioned and hosted by the hackathon experts at XMG Studio Inc. and the Government of Canada, more than 1303 tech enthusiasts competed for the chance to present their application at the CODE Grand Finale on March 26rd, 2015, and share in $40,000 in prizes. IBM, supporter of the open data movement, provided the Commerce category sponsorship to encourage the event.

As part of Open Data Day on Saturday SEUK and the Cabinet Office launched an  online dashboard showing  public sector funding to SEUK members over the past three financial years. Kirsty Weakley looks at what this tells us. Over the last three years £567m has been spent by public sector bodies with around 800 SEUK members. While it’s difficult to say whether the amount itself should be considered good or bad, we can certainly draw a few conclusions from it. Most notably, most government funding goes to only a very few organisations, and little money flows from central government to social enterprise. Compared to grant funding this is still reasonably small scale.
