In order for Journalists in Ghana to play a better watchdog role through generating data driven stories on the extractive sectors, the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), the School of Data, African Spending and Penplusbytes, is running the training “DRILLING DOWN: Ghana extractives data dive” from the 25th – 27th February, 2015 at Penplusbytes’ ultra-modern New Media Hub in Accra. The participants for this 3-day data dive are all alumni of “Strengthening Media Oversight of the Extractive Sectors” program, drawn from various media organizations in Ghana including Daily Guide, Radio max, The Sun, Joy FM, B&FT, New Crusading Guide, Daily Graphic, GBC, Public Agenda, Citi FM, The Enquirer, The Finder, Radio Max, and Ghana News Agency (GNA).

The UK now offers the most affordable broadband in Europe according to a new report. The minimum price of a basic broadband connection has fallen over the last year and people in the UK can now pay as little as 0.85pc of their income for a fixed broadband subscription – the best deal in Europe according to a new EU survey. Overall, the UK ranked sixth for digital performance out of the 28 EU member states. The speed of internet connectivity has also improved, with subscriptions for fast broadband increasing from 21pc in 2013 to 28pc in 2014. However, the report highlighted the need for progress in several areas such as the deployment of fibre, the number of trained IT professionals to fill the large and growing demand, and the integration of digital technology by businesses.

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — The room is a narrow cut of office space that could accommodate roughly 10 desks. Windows border one side; the other is an orange wall that opens to a nearby kitchen. It used to be a conference and lunch area. But the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority in California’s Santa Clara County has big plans for this small space — it now serves as the VTA Innovation Center, adorned with flat screens, digital workstations and other gadgetry. A grand opening event on Feb. 18 brought technologists from across the Silicon Valley to hear about a program that will act as a “living laboratory” for testing new technologies.

Social Enterprise UK and the Cabinet Office have teamed up to publish data for the first time that enables people to track money spent by local authorities and central government on social enterprises. Since the launch of the Buy Social Directory in June 2014, work has been underway to strengthen the quality of the entries in the directory and make the data open. By releasing this data, it will be easier to understand the range of products and services that social enterprises offer. A new dashboard was launched on International Open Data Day (Saturday 21 February) to help users analyse this data. Users will now be able to drill down into the statistics to discover the top local authority and central government buyers of products and services from social enterprises .

Big Data enables an inflection point in business, and it presents a $1 trillion-plus opportunity for vendors and practitioners, says Wikibon Principal Research Contributor Jeff Kelly.  In his keynote to theCUBE’s BigDataSV evening program last week in parallel with HadoopWorld, Kelly addressed six questions that are often raised by the Wikibon community when discussing Big Data and also presented an overall optimistic picture of the future. Kelly said adoption is still immature, partly because practitioners have to put together many piece parts of unfamiliar technologies to create a working system. Even large enterprises often do not have the requisite skill sets. Furthermore, they do not understand what to do with the technology to maximize return.

A Montreal app developer called TransitApp is claiming to have done in one afternoon what the Maryland Transit Administration claims would have taken more than half a million dollars and who knows how long: It turned the transit agency’s real-time bus data into an mobile app for riders. TransitApp uses open data to track transportation departure times in 89 regions. “The best practices now in the transit world, and what you see a lot of agencies doing, is they don’t even bother creating their own proprietary [interfaces],” says TransitApp strategy and development director Jake Sion. “They just make the data available to developers. There are a lot of developers out there that can create a really great app for a pretty low cost.

Code for America’s fourth annual CodeAcross civic hacking event took place this past weekend, February 20 – 22, bringing together civically-minded technologists, designers, activists, organizers, and city government in roughly 60 communities around the world. The organizing theme for all events was “Principles for 21st Century Government,” although events varied in terms of duration and content. From Civic Hall in New York City to the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia, to the University of Washington in Seattle, people gathered for data jams, hackathons, unconferences and collaboration. “CodeAcross isn’t just 60 one-off events,” Hannah Young emphasizes in an email to techPresident. “It’s the kickoff to an entire year of action for each local group.

The State Department marked the recent Open Data Day by touting the one-year anniversary of MapGive, an open data platform that provides its worldwide posts access to open source information and enhanced humanitarian preparedness via mapping and satellite imagery. Supported by the Open Knowledge Foundation, Open Data Day is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write “applications, liberate data, create visualizations using open public data to show support for open data policies by the world’s local, regional and national governments,” according  to the group’s website. MapGive helps new volunteers learn to map and get involved in online tasks and contribute to open gov platforms around the world.

There are a few things that can get categorized under “no brainer” when it comes to government. Even simple issues can be more problematic than they first seem, and you invariably end up navigating a sea of competing, and often ridiculous and self-serving agendas that have less to do with the greater good than politicians would claim. That’s a no brainer if there ever was one. Look, it’s not that sexy an issue. I get it. It takes a special kind of nerd to get excited about getting free, quick and easy access to information on, say, bus routes or the location of parking meters. Not many government scandals are going to be exposed with open data. But the dryness of the information doesn’t make it any less important.

Hadoop vendor Hortonworks announced its first quarterly earnings as a publicly held company Tuesday, claiming $12.5 million in fourth-quarter revenue and $46 million in revenue during fiscal year 2014. The numbers represent 55 percent quarter-over-quarter and 91 percent year-over-year increases, respectively. The company had a net loss of $46.2 million in the fourth quarter and $34.8 million for the year. However, Hortonworks contends that revenue is not the most important number in assessing its business. Rather, as CEO Rob Bearden explained around the time the company filed its S-1 pre-IPO statement in November, Hortonworks’ thinks its total billings are a more accurate representation of its health.
