The University of Arizona will host Arizona Migrahack from Friday through Sunday, bringing together computer programmers, Web designers, journalists, nonprofits and community members on the topic of immigration. The free event will be held at the UA Science and Engineering Library, where participants will work on Web-based projects that focus on the U.S.-Mexico border and migration issues in Arizona-Sonora. Arizona Migrahack, organized by the Institute for Justice and Journalism, the UA Center for Border & Global Journalism and the UA School of Journalism, will focus on improving public understanding about immigration. Previous Migrahacks have been held in Mexico City and Chicago.

My Sunday column marked the start of Sunshine Week by recognizing a truly notable event: the voluntary liberation of a trove of public data by regional and county governments, done in the interests of efficiency and transparency. You can browse through it all on the MetroGIS web site called datafinder. To get a sense of what the open data community does with all of this stuff, check out the projects that emerged from the Hennepin GeoCode event last month. Eight months after Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker announced her department was looking to hire a chief data officer, a former presidential innovation fellow has stepped into the role. On Friday, during the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, Pritzker announced the hiring of Ian Kalin as the Commerce Department’s inaugural CDO. The same day, Kalin, a Navy lieutenant, confirmed the news via Twitter, saying he had accepted the job offer and was excited about the opportunity. “I’m writing to confirm a rumor. I have returned to government service,” he posted in a second tweet. Kalin is far from new to the data world. As a presidential innovation fellow working within the Energy Department, Kalin spearheaded the U.S.

The open source movement is one of the most powerful forces pushing technology forward. It’s easy to forget that not long ago, startups had to raise tons of money from VCs to license Oracle or a web server. Today any tiny startup has access to the best tools in the world. But the lack of open data still seriously holds innovation back, and as data becomes more critical, the problem becomes worse. For example, think about how hard it is for innovative predictive analytics companies to get off the ground. It’s not that they don’t have the software; it’s that they don’t have the data. There are plenty of excellent open source projects to build on top of (Sci-Py, R, etc.). But the lack of usable data is a huge issue when it comes to testing and training the algorithms in any domain.

When big names including GE, Hortonworks, IBM, Infosys, Pivotal, SAS, AltiScale, Capgemini, CenturyLink, EMC, Splunk, Verizon Enterprise Solutions, Teradata, and VMware announce a new alliance to create and push for big data technology using open source, it’s hard to ignore. Dubbed the “Open Data Platform” (ODP), the association will do this by creating readily-adoptable solutions for anyone, association member or otherwise to use, which, according to the organization, will set it apart from existing big data alliances. “Existing big data partnerships they seem a lot more focused on sales and consulting services while we’re focused on technology adoption,” said Lucas Budsman, CTO of CenturyLink, one of the member companies.
