On the occasion of Sunshine Week, in which awareness is raised over the free flow — or lack thereof — of government information, we first turn to two of America’s greatest citizens, whose public lives continue to influence each of our own. The annual observation of Sunshine Week is scheduled around the March 16 birth date of James Madison, considered the father of the U.S. Constitution and its Bill of Rights; he also was the fourth president of the United States. If assuring constitutional inclusion of the First Amendment weren’t enough to cement his place in the history of free-press advocacy, President Madison is on record with a number of sentiments underscoring its primacy in American life.
