New York Attorney General Eric Schniderman has launched a new API geared toward offering more information about government. NYOpenGovernment.com is an effort by the Attorney General’s office to promote the public’s right to know and monitor governmental decision-making, according to a statement. The website and API aggregates a range of government information including – campaign finance, lobbying, charities, state contracts, member items, corporate registrations, elected officials, and legislation. The NY Open Government API will allow developers easier access to this data, which they can use in the creation of applications. Currently, the database is used by good government groups, reporters, and law enforcement agencies for analysis, general information, and even investigations.

As the buzz over big data grows ever louder, techies are eagerly harnessing their power to capture and process vast streams of detailed information from different aspects of life to address various needs – including those you never knew you had. Spoken News is among 70 apps created using data that the government began releasing in 2011. Gathering information on availability of parking, nearby petrol stations and road conditions, its greatest use has been in helping drivers figure out how they can steer clear of traffic jams. The app has been gaining traction, with 60,000 users signing up since it was released last year, says Will Kwok Yu-ho, an IT lecturer at Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Sha Tin) who developed Spoken News with colleague Roy Lam Wai-lun.

NEW YORK—The Attorney General;’s office says it’ll be introducing an application-programming interface (API) that will allow application developers to access and use data from its NYOpenGovernment.com database. NYOpenGovernment.com is an effort by the Attorney General’s office to promote the public’s right to know and monitor governmental decision-making; it is the only statewide resource that aggregates a range of sources for state government information – including data on campaign finance, lobbying, charities, state contracts, member items, corporate registrations, elected officials, and legislation – which is otherwise scattered or difficult to retrieve. A free event taking place next week will introduce local government service delivery officers and managers to the potential of open data, including showing participants how to build an app from scratch. The Really Useful Day from the Local Digital campaign will explain what open data is, what kind of data is safe to release, what information goes in an open dataset, the barriers to publishing open data and how to find interesting datasets. No previous technical or open data knowledge is required. Open data is publicly available non-sensitive information that can be freely used. By combining or ‘linking’ data it can become more useful, for example, by adding data to a map and creating an app that allows residents to report graffiti in their area.

Amazon Web Services is offering its customers free use of over 85,000 satellite images, setting the stage for new types of geographically-oriented cloud applications. The images, from the Landsat 8 observation satellite, are already available at no cost directly from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which oversees the Landsat program. But the public agency isn’t in the position to offer the data for high-volume use by third-party applications, which means developers have had to spend considerable time and resources creating ways to download, store and prepare the data for use.

What does Cloudera want to be when it grows up? That was the question one analyst asked Cloudera co-founder and chief strategy officer Mike Olson at the company’s analyst day this week, to which Olson responded, “We want to be the big data company” — not any big data company, but the big data company. By some measures, Cloudera is well on its way toward the goal, with competitors like Pivotal dropping their Hadoop ambitions — which led Cloudera CEO Tom Reilly to effectively declare victory. But in fact, the market is still wide open. The need for a more open attitude towards invasive alien species data New research published with the support of the FP7 large-scale bioinformatics project Building the European Biodiversity Observation Network (EU BON) and the Alien Challenge COST action reveals the importance of open data in the study and control of invasive alien species. The study was published online in open access in the journal Management of Biological Invasions. Invasive alien species cause a wide variety of problems, including issues related to conservation; to human and animal health; to agriculture and to fisheries management.
