The federal government is starting to keep score when it comes to web metrics. The newly launched analytics.usa.gov tracks traffic to federal websites. The Data.gov portal that hosts federal datasets tags the most popular. By any measure, the Department of Commerce is a hot web property, and that’s just the way Secretary Penny Pritzker wants it, according to agency CIO Steve Cooper. On any given day, but especially on days that don’t fall within tax season, Commerce entities occupy four or five slots on the top 10 list of web traffic, and a similar proportion of the most downloaded datasets. “Our secretary is competitive. She is on us to maintain this lead — in a very positive way.

It’s time to ‘hack’ into the Government People are hacking into government information all around the world – it’s something I want to encourage. Not illegal hacking of course, but similar to the secondary school student Mash Up competition last weekend. They were tasked with designing web-based business ideas to get young people socialising more to cure boredom. Their solutions pulled together all sorts of information about tourism, transport, sports, shopping and cultural sectors to encourage young people to get out in their community. I realise the power of open data as I competed in last year’s Tauranga Start Up Weekend – a more advanced version of the Mash Up competition. The government sector is notoriously known for being data-rich but information-poor.

Your weather forecasts are brought you to by the good folks at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Census Bureau’s data can paint an almost block-by-block picture of the American populace. But under the leadership of Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, the agency isn’t content with just dropping massive data sets into the abyss of the Internet. The agency, which is composed of 12 bureaus, is “embracing crowdsourcing” on a small scale to improve the quality of the data it releases to the public, Steve Cooper, the agency’s chief information officer, said at a tech event Wednesday hosted by FCW.

Today, at their Annual Conference in Birmingham, the Society for General Microbiology will announce the launch Microbial Genomics, a fully open access journal publishing research articles that use genomic approaches to further our understanding of microbiology, from clinically important pathogens to microbial life in diverse ecosystems. Submissions to Microbial Genomics are open now, with all open access fees waived during the launch period. The journal’s first articles will be published in July 2015. Microbial Genomics is the first journal from the Society to publish with a mandatory open data policy, requiring authors to archive any data associated with their paper.
