Genetic information that could help slow disease outbreaks may be kept private by researchers out of fear of violating patients’ rights — that was one of the concerns expressed in a Nature article recently. [1]At the height of the Ebola epidemic , the authors of the piece sequenced 99 Ebola genomes from patients in Sierra Leone. The data was immediately uploaded to the public database GenBank and led to a surge in collaborations that eventually confirmed the virus had spread from Guinea to Sierra Leone, and indicated that the outbreak was being sustained by human-to-human transmission.But the researchers wrote of a slump in the numbers of Ebola virus genomes isolated from patients and uploaded to open data repositories after theirs in mid-2014.

At this time last year, Lauren Ancona had never made a map. But halfway into 2014, with help from from the free and open source mapping community and Code for America, she successfully created her first map of Philadelphia parking districts: The parking map got a lot of attention and landed Ancona a job with the city’s Office of Innovation and Technology as a data scientist. Now she’s back with a beautiful blueprint-style world map made using Mapbox Studio. The blueprint is based on Open Street Map data, so the level of detail varies depending on the city. Chicago, for example, is pretty detailed, even when zoomed in: So is New York.

The marriage of age-old practises and new technology is proving to be fruitful. Steven Michaleski, 28, experienced the benefits of combining farming with data-sourcing and web application development first-hand. The former Fort Garry resident who recently relocated to La Salle, Man. is one half of the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) winning team, Farm Canada. Michaleski and his cousin Adam Michaleski developed the web application Farm Canada as part of XMG Studio Inc. and the Canadian government’s annual CODE hackathon, a 48-hour coding sprint where developers from across the country create apps using data from Canada’s Open Government Portal. Out of over a 100 entries, Farm Canada was chosen as the winner in Commerce-Business Opportunities category on March 26.

Addis Ababa, 29 March 2015 (AUC-ECA) – African governments should acknowledge open data provided by recognised communities as sources that complement the work of national statistics offices for better decision making, service delivery and citizen engagement, concluded a group of data activists today in the Ethiopian capital. In the context of this year’s AUC-ECA Conference of Ministers, stakeholders in various data communities brainstormed on what a data revolution would mean for the continent and penned down a proposed Africa Data Consensus, intended to support the continent adopt evidence-based inclusive development policies.

The UK is combining the role of Government Chief Information Officer with Chief Data Officer to set out new standards across the civil service. Mike Bracken, the government’s Executive Director of Digital (and de facto head of government ICT) has just been appointed Chief Data Officer. Bracken has been given the role to ensure a strong push on data sharing from the centre of government. “We’ve lacked the central coordination needed to really move the data agenda forward,” he wrote. “Much of the work so far has been delivered as discrete projects, and we need to align our efforts so that we’re as effective as possible in using public data for the benefit of citizens and business.
