Greater Sudbury Council has voted to adopt a policy and licensing standards that will open municipal datasets to the public at no charge for reuse with minimal restrictions. An open data portal will be available online at www.greatersudbury.ca/opendata in mid-2015 for downloads of data in machine-readable formats. “Open data will allow citizens, businesses, city employees, managers and council to work together in ways previously not possible,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger. “Empowering citizens with data is part of my pledge to reduce costs for the City and improve service delivery for residents.

IREALAND – Irish tech experts have joined industry and research partners across the EU and Israel on a pooled research and technology project which is set to boost production and jobs in the global aquaculture industry, without harming the environment. The AQUASMART project focuses on developing best practice within the aquaculture sector by helping companies to transform captured data into knowledge. The €3.1m project consortium includes prominent industrial organisations and research institutes from six countries, among them Ireland, Israel, Slovenia, Spain, Portugal and Greece.

Appleの最近リリースのiOS 8.3アップデートは、iFunBox、IEXPLORER、iToolsなどのアプリが

端末上のアプリのディレクトリにアクセスさせないようにしてしまう。

いくつかのアプリは、一時的な修正で対応したがが、すべてが再び働いているまでには少し時間がかかるだろう。

LONDON: Apple’s recently released iOS 8.3 update prevents desktop file explorers like iFunBox, iExplorer, iTools, and others from accessing the app directories on your devices. A few have updated with temporary fixes, but it might take a little while before everything’s working again. Essentially, iOS 8.3 prevents these utilities from accessing apps unless they have iTunes File Sharing enabled. This means users can’t manually transfer over files or back up save file information. iFunBox explains the problem on their Facebook page: “OS 8.3 ruined our freedom of controlling data in our installed Apps and Games. Apple blocked access of the entire sandbox directory of every installed App since iOS 8.3. Previously only writing is block in executable directory.

The Dutch government does not seem to use it’s own open data portal. If it does, it would have found that 14 percent of the datasets it released are not accessible because they contain no working links. This is the conclusion of a test done by Open State Foundation. Recently the Dutch government released an upgrade of its open data portal (data.overheid.nl). This national open data portal consists of 3,623 datasets of the Central Bureau of Statistics and 2,560 datasets of the National Georegistry and 345 datasets from government departments, municipalities and other governmental agencies. The quality has been improved compared to our study last year but still not all links are working. One-third (888) of all links to the datasets National Georegistry is not working.

Scott Yara, CEO and founder of Pivotal said he hopes Hadoop developer Cloudera will opt to join the recently formed Open Data Platform group. Speaking to CBR Yara said Cloudera and Hortonworks have very different philosophies in their approach to the market. “Cloudera decided not to participate [at the formation of the Open Data Platform] and I respect their decision and our hope is they absolutely will join because we think it is the right thing to do,” Yara told CBR. He said Pivotal believes that what was true for Linux is just as true for Hadoop so the Open Data Platform initiative was announced with IBM, Hortonworks, Teradata, SAS, Verizon, Splunk, Centurylink and others.

Last week, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) posted updated guidance to the Project Open Data Github for agencies as they continue to compile indexes of their data holdings. Agencies are now instructed to “Include all ‘non-public’ data assets in their PDL [Public Data Listing], in addition to the ‘public’ and ‘restricted’ data assets that have long been required.” It also tells agencies to fully explain the reasons for “non-public” designations and redactions in the metadata. This change turns the one-time results of a Sunlight FOIA request into effective policy moving forward, ensuring that the public will continue to have the fullest possible knowledge of agency data holdings.

The heavyweight members of the Open Data Platform (ODP) are making waves today with an announcement that shows they’re deadly serious about their plans to “standardize” Hadoop. Speaking at the Hadoop Summit in Brussels earlier today, Hortonworks, Inc., IBM and Pivotal Software, Inc. said that from this point onward all three would use a standardized version of Hadoop 2.6 that’s built from a “common core” of components. The idea, says the ODP, is to solve the interoperability issues enterprises face when trying to work with so many different versions of the popular Big Data technology. Hortonworks, IBM and Pivotal have announced that they have aligned their Hadoop platforms on the Open Data Platform core of Apache Hadoop 2.6. The move is a big step for the ODP initiative as its proponents say they are looking to simplify the adoption of Apache Hadoop for the enterprise. The Hortonworks Data Platform 2.2, IBM Open Platform 4.0 and Pivotal 3.0 are all based on the common ODP core and are all available in the market today. This alignment should see that compatibility issues are alleviated, as well as easing the burden of testing and validation for customers.

IBM will offer its Watson AI and cloud platform to developers making apps to access health data collected by Apple devices, such as the Apple Watch. The aim is to give medical researchers a “secure, open data storage solution” as well as access to the Watson supercomputer’s sophisticated analytics. The Watson Health Cloud system will work with both HealthKit, Apple’s platform for consumer health apps, and ResearchKit, which is designed for use by medical researchers. IBM will anonymise and securely store the data in the cloud, giving access to researchers as well as support with data mining and predictive analysis. That means doctors, researchers and possibly insurers can use the anonymised data to aid their research into illnesses.
