The Anderson Township mother is big on what the White House wants: using data and technology to build trust in the community. Cincinnati crime data isn’t just gathered, it’s intensely analyzed. What’s going on, where, to whom and why; Dr. Robin Engel helps with that. That was part of the reason she went to the White House. At weekly meetings data is reviewed, strategies are discussed. The White House wants police departments to share this kind of data with the public.

Where is the missing Cabinet Office spend data? The General Election is fast approaching and many questions are being fired at the candidates for varying government offices. One question unlikely to be answered is, where is the missing Cabinet Office spend data? Is there some sort of issue with publically updating this information? If there is, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), Ministry of Defence (MoD) and HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC) certainly are not having the same problems, as they have managed to provide spend data up to at least December of last year. This data spend details how public money is being spent on a monthly basis, with all departments required to detail spend on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Ross Goldenberg, co-founder of SiteCompli, which leverages open data to help those in the New York City real estate market, believes government needs more similar tools to help bring open data to the citizens. He says SiteCompli has made the jobs of thousands of customers easier. “The ability to get more data from government, make it more public, make it more machine readable, and get it in the hands of its constituents in a meaningful manner has improved the lives of thousands,” Goldenberg said.

You rarely see Google Glass anymore, but if Recon Instruments has its way, you’ll be seeing plenty more head-mounted displays in the future. The Recon Jet, launched Thursday, is a pair of smart eyeglasses for sporty activities like running and biking. Bristling with sensors, the device shows all kinds of biometric data and social stats on its tiny heads-up display. Paired with a smartphone, it can take pictures and video, send and receive status updates, find friends and family on the piste and much more. But sports is just a start. If Recon is successful — and that’s a big if — we may be seeing smart glasses in a lot more places. Recon is betting hard that the face is the place for smart wearables.

Last month, we wrote about Mapbox’s envelope-pushing Landsat-live map. Fed by gorgeous, high-res imagery of the planet captured every 16 days by the USGS’ Landsat satellite, the map offers a first-of-its-kind chance to explore the Earth’s surface as it appears in (almost) real time. It’s no surprise that other folks are also making moves on that Landsat data. Satellite and software company Astro Digital just released a way to easily browse Landsat imagery dating back to in February 2013 (the launch of Landsat) through this very moment (Landsat is constantly rephotographing the planet in patches). Because even though the full archive of Landsat images is free and open-source, the USGS website doesn’t exactly make it simple for mapping noobs to view or use it.

Open source software, sharing data and inclusive government decision-making are all part of one big philosophy, explains visiting American “evangelist” Ben Balter. Balter said that if Kiwi workers want to spread the light about new ways of collaborating and sharing information within their organisations, the best way might be to start small. Speaking at the Open Source Open Society conference organised by a cluster of open source software companies in Wellington, Balter suggested people started with the smallest step they could think of.

Municipal open data has a new way to map itself. Open data visualization startup Appallicious has announced plans to use its technology to map all varieties of open and internal data for cities. The expanded features are part of a major refresh to the San Francisco company’s Disaster Assessment and Assistance Dashboard (DAAD), that maps local emergency and recovery resources in real-time. Through the dashboard, endorsed by FEMA, citizens can request assistance, first responders can update first aid locations, and local businesses can advertise recovery services – a significant boon to recuperating economies.
