The Open Data Platform (ODP) — formed a couple months ago to advance Hadoop-based Big Data technologies for the enterprise — has achieved its stated goal to develop a standard “ODP Core” upon which to base projects. Consortium members Hortonworks Inc., IBM Corp. and Pivotal Software Inc. yesterday said their respective Big Data products are now aligned on this core, comprising version 2.6 of the open source Apache Hadoop software. Included with Apache Hadoop 2.6 in this core are individual components such as Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), MapReduce, YARN (often described as an improvement upon MapReduce) and the Apache Ambari management tool.

On 24 April, it will be 25 years since the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, into low-Earth orbit aboard the space shuttle Discovery. As well as revolutionizing astrophysics, the first major optical observatory in space — built by NASA with contributions from the European Space Agency (ESA) — has brought the excitement of scientific discovery into millions of homes. Ask people to name a telescope and most will probably say “Hubble”. Circling the Earth every hour and a half, the observatory has completed more than 130,000 orbits and taken more than 1 million exposures of astronomical objects, from dust clouds to distant galaxies.

Brian Forde, former White House senior advisor for mobile and data innovation, has joined the MIT Media Lab as director of digital currency. In this newly created position, Forde will work with researchers across the Institute and leading experts at other universities around the world in a new initiative to address some of the most critical challenges to creating a safe, stable, and secure digital currency. “We are fortunate to have Brian join the Media Lab to help organize an important research agenda to get cryptocurrencies right,” Media Lab Director Joi Ito says.

To encourage civic engagement and increase transparency, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan signed the GO DATA executive order aimed at creating “a more open, collaborative and accountable relationship between the city government and the people it serves.” The city’s new open data portal is the first sign of the shift in city policy to make data and information available to the public. Citizens will be able to access crime reports, building and trade permits, blight remediation data among 75 individual data sets that include over 60 maps of libraries and parks.  There will be nearly 400,000 individual pieces of data available pertaining to city operations.

Health data collected on Apple devices will be stored in IBM’s Health Cloud for analysis by medical professionals and researchers. IBM this week announced a partnership with Apple to further advancements in health analytics. This initiative, which complements IBM’s new Watson Health unit, aims to leverage big data analytics systems and secure open data storage to bring greater insight to medical researchers. As part of the collaboration, IBM’s Health Cloud and Watson cognitive computing will harness health data that Apple customers submit to iOS apps through its ResearchKit and HealthKit platforms. The goal is to use that information to further medical research and improve customer health.

Speaking during the Hadoop Summit in Brussels this afternoon, the vendors were quick to add that the Open Data Platform was not an attempt to muscle together and crush competitors like Cloudera, but was in the interests of increasing Hadoop adoption within enterprise.

New York City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito has a plan to drastically upgrade the council’s online presence and improve digital tools for constituents who can’t follow city government in person. Under the Digital 2.0 plan released late Monday, residents will be asked to submit questions and observations on either legislation or administrative oversight issues, said Mark-Viverito — a prolific Tweeter in her own right. But using Twitter to grill Bill de Blasio’s administration is a small part of the overall plan. Council will direct a team to build a new Council website using the new .nyc domain, a better legislative information database to make it easier to follow legislative changes, and a pilot program to experiment with text messaging as a key communications vehicle.
