Government attempts to unlock data sets to the public have yet to make an impact on most citizens, a new survey suggests. Though 65 percent of Americans have used the Internet to find government-related information in the last 12 months, just 5 percent believe the federal government shares information “very effectively” with the public, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center. Thirty-nine percent said the federal government does so “somewhat effectively,” the report showed. These findings show that open government data initiatives — a federal open data plan, data set repositories and other efforts — are still in their early stages, according to Pew researchers.

Though 65% of Americans in a recent survey said they’d used the Internet to look up government information over the past year, only a small fraction of them believe officials do a good job of getting data to the public. According to a new Pew Research Center survey on how Americans view government data, just 5% of Americans believe the federal government “very effectively” shares information. The center’s survey concluded that citizens don’t think their state or local governments are doing any better, either. Americans also have mixed feelings about whether better data transparency will make government more efficient.

Despite large-scale efforts over the past decade by officials at every level to bring more government information and services online, Americans’ attitudes toward “e-Gov” services are still decidedly mixed, according to the results of a study released today by the Pew Research Center. Americans’ responses to questions about the effectiveness and availability of online services tended to correlate strongly with broader views about trust in government. Of those who said they generally trust the federal government, 76% said that government data can be used to help keep officials accountable, and 73% said that government data can help journalists do their jobs more effectively.

SINGAPORE — Foreign and Singapore companies attending a conference on the Republic’s Smart Nation drive said today (April 21) that they are eager to be part of it, but highlighted several kinks that they felt have to be ironed out for the initiative to take off. For Justin Elszasz, it’s a chance to dig into the civic data available on Baltimore’s open data portal. From his blog, The Training Set, everyone can get a window onto Elszasz’s view of the city’s data, whether the topic is parking or segregation. Along with providing a look at what Elszasz is curious about, it also provides a look at what it’s like to work with the data that Baltimore’s government puts out. A trained mechanical engineer, Elszasz works by day at Navigant Consulting, which has a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to help create energy efficiency standards and policy.

President Barack Obama once proclaimed his administration to be the most transparent in history, but a new survey suggests Americans have mixed thoughts on whether new initiatives to open government and its data will make a significant difference in holding the powerful accountable. A report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center, in conjunction with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, found that most Americans are not engaged with using government data sources. Just 7 percent say local governments share their information effectively. Even fewer — 5 percent of more than 3,000 American adults surveyed — think federal government agencies are doing a very effective job sharing the data they collect.

A new survey report from the Pew Research Center, conducted in association with the Knight Foundation and released this morning, finds that a slight majority of the public believes more transparency and open government data can help journalists cover government better and make government more accountable. Skepticism about the government’s overall ability to do the right thing appears to drive public attitudes, with only 45% saying that open government data can result in better decisions by government and 53% disagreeing. Partisan identities also strongly color opinion about this issue, with Democrats far more optimistic about government transparency efforts and Republicans far more skeptical.

Bloomberg Philanthropies, Michael Bloomberg’s charity arm, announced Monday the launch of a $42 million initiative to help local governments make better decisions based on data. Over 100 mid-sized cities — population 100,000 to 1 million — are eligible to apply for the What Works Cities initiative. The research and collaboration with governments will be conducted through five organizations, including the D.C.-based Sunlight Foundation. The nonprofit group has been advocating for and researching open data programs for local governments since about 2012. Through the grant — Sunlight’s share has yet to be finalized — the organization will be “helping to pass along what we’ve seen as the most effective ways for governments to open up data,” said National Policy Manager Emily Shaw.

The Commerce Department is partnering with five leading technology outfits to make 20 terabytes of environmental data available for easier access and analysis by the public. The move, announced by Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker in an address at the American Meteorological Society on Tuesday morning, could open up new markets for environmental information just as profound challenges related to global warming and other environmental threats come to the fore. With much more data made available, existing companies and new startups can innovate to provide new products that help predict climate change, issue life-saving weather warnings and protect depleted fisheries, for example.

Americans take for granted being able to go online to get a flight arrival time, turning on GPS for directions or checking online to see what the house next door sold for. But a new study find most have no idea the data that makes all that possible is part of an open government initiative launched in 2008. When they know that, they like it–but not when the information lets others look up information about their mortgage. “People may say ‘it’s great I can find out where the bus is,’ but they may not put it together that the government was behind making the information available,” said John Horrigan, a senior researcher at the Pew Research Center, which conducted the survey.
