Lauren Ancona, from the US city of Philadelphia, decided to try her hand at digital cartography because she was not happy with the amount of information about parking in her home city that was available online. She explained to The Independent that as she charted street regulations in Philadelphia last summer, she stumbled upon an open source software tool called Mapbox Studio, which enables users to create custom base maps. From there, she set herself the daunting task of mapping the world as a learning exercise. Rather than Google Maps, the Blueprint Map uses Open Street Map – a Wikipedia-type website for cartography – and the City of Philadelphia’s Open Data resources.

MOSCOW (Sputnik)On May 9, 2013, US President Barack Obama signed an executive order to make information about government operations more available and transparent. Open government is generally defined as allowing citizens access to documents and government proceedings for the purposes of effective public oversight, in part mitigating secrecy by the state. According to the poll, 56 percent of US citizens support open data initiatives for better government coverage by media, while 41 percent said it would not help the press. More than a half of those polled, 53 percent, think open government data will make officials more accountable to the public. Slightly lower number, 45 percent, do not believe in it.

President Obama has made a big deal about making it easier for people to access data the government collects — even signing an executive order in 2013 aimed at making so-called “open data” the new default for government information. A new report from the Pew Research Center shows that a lot of Americans use the Internet to access government data: Some 37 percent of American adults found information or data about the federal government online during the past year, while slightly fewer did the same for state and local governments. A new report from Pew Research Center shows that a majority of Americans don’t trust the government, but plenty use its open data — often without realizing they’re doing so. Just 23 percent of respondents in this nationally representative survey say they trust the federal government to be a good actor “most of the time.” That is only one out of five people. Of that minority, 76 percent believe government data can help public officials remain accountable, and 73 percent believe that data can help journalists report on the government. The term “open government” was first used in the 1950s during congressional deliberations that led to the creation of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIAA).

The Commerce Department is one giant step closer its goal of unleashing its vast stores of environmental data to the public and further boosting the data-driven economy.  That expanded access, however, is likely to come with a price tag attached — not for the agency, but rather for the data’s end users. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker announced a big data project to bring the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s vast datasets to the cloud and make them broadly available. In partnership with Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, IBM, Microsoft and the Open Cloud Consortium, NOAA will work to more effectively distribute its data to create new and innovative products and services.

Is it kid-friendly? What athletic fields and playground facilities can you find there? That tree across the street with the unusual leaves – what kind is it anyway? If those and other questions have you looking for answers, the city’s recently opened data portal, OpenEvanston.org may be for you. Officials launched the one-stop collaborative effort among city departments to “liberate city data, for easier consumption and use by the public,” said Luke Stowe, the city’s digital services coordinator, announcing the launch of the new portal at the Feb. 23 City Council meeting.

It might seem like all of California is busy naming scapegoats who consume unfair shares of water during the state’s historic drought. But there’s actually no way for the public to go after the state’s worst water wasters because there’s no way of knowing who they are. Legislation has ensured that much of the state’s water data will never be made public. In fact, California is the only state in the west that does not make its water data public. While the state has promised to call out cities with exceptionally high per capita water usage-information which was only released by the state for the first time last year-that’s one small part of the water data story.

Bloomberg Philanthropies has launched a new initiative aimed at improving cities throughout the US. The goal of the $42 million effort will be to support 100 mid-sized US cities improve how they use data and evidence. Bloomberg Philanthropies is using its partner network to target mayors and local leaders make better government decisions and engage the public through data. Cities will have to apply for consideration from the philanthropy. Any city with populations between 10,000 and 1 million people can apply. “While cities are working to meet new challenges with limited resources, they have access to more data than ever – and they are increasingly using it to improve people’s lives,” said Michael R. Bloomberg.
