Ever rush to a meeting only to realize that your favorite route is clogged because of construction? Then you head to the nearest parallel road and find another lane squeezed out of commission by people in reflective vests? Waze isn’t going to fix the lack of coordination when it comes to various fix-it projects on Los Angeles roads. These events often involve different bureaucracies — the L.A. Department of Transportation, Caltrans, utilities and even private development projects — that aren’t always on the same page. But at least everybody’s favorite traffic app will warn you when city projects such as road closures, construction and safety hazards will pop up along your route.

The city of Cincinnati says it is enhancing transparency by sharing the city’s data with the general public in a new way. Open Data Cincinnati will allow anyone to browse through various datasets of information collected by the city to document how the government operates, officials said at an announcement Wednesday. “The city believes giving the data to the public will encourage residents to help come up with creative tools to engage, improve and serve the community. The long-term vision is for the new portal to improve customer service, increase accountability and stimulate economic activity through data sharing,” the city said in a news release.

A partnership between Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel and the finance visualization startup OpenGov will result in one of the most sweeping statewide transparency efforts to date. The initiative, announced earlier this month, offers 3,900-plus local governments — from townships, cities, counties, to school districts and more — a chance to place revenues and expenditures online free of charge through the state’s budget transparency site OhioCheckbook.com. The endeavor is the culmination of the state’s financial transparency campaign that launched in 2007 when Mandel took office and put public salaries and state property data online.

Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker announced April 21 that her department has joined forces with several major companies to make troves of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data accessible to the public and private sector. The department’s collaboration with the cloud computing divisions of Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft as well as the nonprofit Open Cloud Consortium is the result of a process started by NOAA last year when it issued a request for information about how it could more effectively distribute its data to the public.

Local politics get their flavor from regional ingredients that make for a different kind of stew. In Philadelphia — long a poor city on the decline now seeing its fortunes turn upward — new, previously unfamiliar flavors have been added to the electoral pot. Pols talk tech now. That means 350 people pouring into the Free Library Monday night for a tech-focused mayoral forum (despite dozens of other mayoral discussions this year). But it also means a lunchtime conversation on the new economy among some of the at-large City Council candidates. Open data, startup retention and software education have entered the Philadelphia political fray just as tourism, urban planning and transit once did.

Americans are mixed on whether or not “open data” initiatives will make government officials more accountable to the public, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center. Right now, everything from crime statistics to campaign contributions to public health information is available on government sites like Data.Gov. Most Americans have used the Internet to find information pertaining to the government, but it tends to be for simple things like local park hours or instructions on how to renew a driver’s license. Less than a quarter of the people polled had used public data to keep tabs on how the government is performing, according to the report.

City Manager Harry Black has repeatedly said his administration will be transparent and data driven. Now, he’s putting those ideas together and encouraging resident engagement. A new initiative, Open Data Cincinnati, will allow anyone to browse various city-created data sets at https://data.cincinnati-oh.gov/ . The hope is citizens will come up with creative tools to engage, improve and serve the community. “Open Data Cincinnati is about more than just stats, numbers and bar charts,” Black said. “This is about the city opening itself up to the people we serve on a daily basis.” Black has made it a priority to establish Cincinnati as a national model for using data analytics to make city government more efficient and effective.

Ever wonder if the water you’re drinking water is safe? Or just how well a given state, territory or tribal region is complying with statutory water-quality guidelines?  The Environmental Protection Agency’s newly released open-data tool addresses both questions head on. The dashboard details violations, water-facility inspection visits and enforcement actions, while also providing information on the range of public water systems themselves.   It is part of the EPA’s Enforcement and Compliance History Online website, which provides the public with a range of tools for learning about local facilities and their compliance with environmental regulations.

“I took this special duty assignment to teach total quality management,” said Collins. “I told my then-fiancé, ‘I don’t want to go to dental school now. I want to do organizational development.’” That led to a job as a deputy fleet administrator with the state, where he implemented software to improve fleet management. After leaving the public sector for a job with Peregrin Systems, Collins jumped back into state work under Secretary of State Jeffrey Bullock. While in that position, Collins worked with the Department of Technology and Information and the Government Information Center quite often. With GIC director Mike Mahaffie, Collins helped implement the veteran services directory before being promoted again to Gov. Jack Markell’s deputy chief of staff.
