JERSEY CITY – Residents in three neighborhoods will soon begin to test a new alert system that will notify them about crime trends in their communities and offer recommendations for how to avoid becoming victims. The alert system, set for a limited release this fall in anticipation of a citywide launch once all the kinks are worked out, will allow users to receive text or email messages about crime trends in South Greenville, Paulus Hook and the neighborhood around Bayside Park. Open-data group Open JC is partnering with the city to create the system using data from the city’s 911 system. Akisia Grigsby, the group’s co-executive director, said the idea isn’t to offer real-time alerts about crimes in progress, but to alert residents about trends city officials are seeing.

It’s no secret that tourists love to snap pictures on the Staten Island ferry. Or that photographers will wander the side streets of east London capturing the latest street art. Everyone knows that Paris’s visitor-friendly arrondissements are flooded with selfie sticks on weekends. Now, a new visualization of more than a decade of Flickr photographs shows exactly what paths photographers make when taking pictures. Mapbox, the Washington, D.C.-based mapping company that provides public mapping tools under an open source philosophy and works with clients like Square, Evernote, and Foursquare, produced the Flickr photography maps using metadata gleaned by scraping the data from publicly available pictures on the site.

The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency has launched a public website hosting unclassified platforms assisting in response efforts after a powerful April 25 earthquake in Nepal. The public site initially on April 26 began hosting search and rescue atlases covering Kathmandu and six other areas of Nepal, providing maps, imagery and data overlaid to assist rescuers and relief planners, according to an NGA release. More products and data layers will be added as they become available. So far, applications available on the site include an NGA Nepal open data search function, a Nepal data services gallery and mapping products. The mapping products provide features such as damage assessments in different regions of the country, terrain and population data.

Casamatic is launching a private beta in Cincinnati of its service that matches users with houses that its co-founders hope will be perfect for the homebuyer. Cloud-based big data provider Pivotal Software and Hortonworks announced the addition of a key component of Pivotal’s Big Data Suite to the Hortonworks’ Hadoop platform. The partners said this week customers investing in Hortonworks’ Data Platform could now run version 1.3 of Pivotal’s HAWQ, an advanced SQL-on-Hadoop engine. The deal expands on Pivotal’s previously announced plans to partner with Hortonworks on enterprise data management and analytics. The deal also marks the first time HAWQ features have been released outside of Pivotal as it implements an Open Data Platform initiative to leverage technologies like Hadoop across different providers. HAWQ was originally developed from Pivotal’s Greenplum Database before it was extended to handle Apache Hadoop workloads.

先日、AsusのVivo Watchが発表されましたね。

Asusは、 昨年のAsus ZenWatchのリリースで、ウェアラブル業界ではGoogleプラットフォームで動作する最も人気のあるスマートウォッチ（サムソン Gear Live、Moto 360、LG G Watchなど）にも匹敵するアンドロイドウェアとして名乗りを上げました。

もし、あなたがアンドロイドウェアのスマートウォッチの購入を考えているとしたら、ZenWatchがベストな選択になるでしょうか？

それともVivo Watchでしょうか？

Vivo Watch最初に英国で120ポンドで販売されるとか。

その他の国、例えば米国での製品リリースについての情報を含め、まだその新しいデバイスについての詳細は公表されていないようですが、米国では約180ドルになるとか。

いまVivo Watchについてわかっていることは、兄貴分のZenWatchとは、大きく異なるデバイスに設定されているということです。

デザイン

ZenWatchは、そこに最も美しいアンドロイドウェア・スマートウォッチの一つと考えられています。

モトローラやLGの円形のデザインとは異なり、どちらかというとアップルウォッチにいくらか類似した角張った感じのデザインが採用されています。

四角張った正方形ではなく、ほどよい丸みを帯びている。

ソフトで快適な感じタンレザーストラップは、プレミアムな表情を覗かせる。

Vivo Watchは、兄貴分のZenWatchと同様に丸みを帯びた四角いディスプレイを採用しているが
ベゼルはZenWatch上よりも薄いように感じる。

Asusは、何種類かの黒の合成素材から作られているように見える標準的な22ミリ幅の交換可能なストラップも用意されるらしい。

バッテリー寿命は？

ほとんどのスマートウォッチは、バッテリーの寿命は1日か2日がせいぜいだ。

新発売のアップル·ウォッチは毎晩充電する必要があるし、アンドロイドウェアデバイスのほとんどは一回の充電で2日は持たない。

369 mAhバッテリ容量を持つZenWatchは、時計​​のように常時表示しておく必要がないものは表示をオフにしてけば、一定の条件の下で２日間程度は持たせることは可能らしい。

しかし、Vivo Watchのバッテリーを長持ちさせるためにいくつかのトレードオフがある。

これらのトレードオフの中で最も顕著なのがディスプレイだ。

ZenWatchの320×320 AMOLEDディスプレイに対して、Vivo Watchは、低消費電力ゴリラガラス３(Gorilla Glass 3)で覆われた128×128のディスプレイ。

この点は、反応速度が速く残像も少ないAMOLEDディスプレイに比べると、どうしても劣る点だろう。

アプリと使い方

このデバイスはAndroid 4.3以上のどんなスマホにでもつながることができて、アンドロイドウェアがすることができることのほとんど全てを行うことができる。

AsusはVivo Watchで、ZenWatchの失敗を補っている。
