With more than 60 tennis courts, a dozen athletic parks and many more free City of Calgary facilities at Calgarian’s doorsteps it’s no surprise finding a field sometimes equates to a needle in a haystack. That’s where Sportsity comes in. It’s a Calgary-based app using the City of Calgary’s open data to map out sports fields all in one place It started from a crowded tennis court; Bilal Karim, one of the developers, couldn’t seem to find a sweet spot to practice his swing. So, seven months ago he and his friend Rustam Kamberov began developing a tool for Calgarians to help locate new courts and other sports facilities around town. “It grew into more than just tennis, and more than just viewing locations,” said Karim.

Last December, President Obama launched the Task Force on 21st Century Policing to better understand specific policing challenges and help communities identify actions they can take to improve law enforcement and enhance community engagement. Since that time, we have seen law enforcement agencies around the country working harder than ever to make the promise of community policing real. Many of the Task Force’s recommendations emphasize the opportunity for departments to better use data and technology to build community trust.

Dubai will be the first city to assess the efficiency and sustainability of its smart city operations using key performance indicators developed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)-T Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities. Building on the efforts of the Task Force on 21st Century Policing, the white house has launched a new police data initiative aimed at improving policing and community relations with the police. The data initiative comes out of the recommendations of the task force which site the need for police to better use data and other technologies to build community trust. According to a blog post from the White House, the initiative will help police departments find ways to accelerate their adoption of data-driven decision making and use of new technologies. President Obama went to Camden, New Jersey today to discuss the initiative and the challenges faced by police departments when it comes to modernization.

The White House announced plans to partner with cities, technology firms, and non-governmental organizations to help U.S. police departments manage and share law enforcement data, with an eye to improving police performance and mending frayed relationships between departments and the communities they serve. Police departments often face technical challenges to gather, organize, and analyze policing and crime data, according to a blog post from federal CTO Megan Smith and presidential advisor Roy L. Austin, Jr. For example, in Camden, N.J., where President Barack Obama announced the initiative, police use 41 individual systems that are not interoperable, requiring redundant data entry on the part of officers, and difficulties in extracting useful insights from data that is collected.
