The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board of Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for FedDev Ontario, today announced up to $3 million for Communitech Corporation to establish the Open Data Exchange (ODX), which will be located in Waterloo, Ontario. Joining Minister Clement to make the announcement was local Kitchener-Waterloo Member of Parliament Peter Braid. The project is expected to result in the incubation of 15 new data-driven companies. It is also expected to create a total of 370 direct and indirect jobs, and to leverage $3-million from project partners and an additional $50 million in venture capital and other financing. Open data is structured data that is machine-readable and freely shared, used and built without restrictions.

WATERLOO — For a company like Desire2Learn in Kitchener, which provides software platforms for educators to build learning content and evaluate student results, it’s all about the quality of the data. “We do a lot of work with predictive analytics,” says Jeremy Auger, chief strategy officer at Desire2Learn. “Using data from classrooms, we can predict whether a student will drop out or fail, and that allows the schools to do intervention or address the risk factors early on.” The more types of data that are in that equation, the better those predictions become, he adds. “So we see huge potential for broader data sets to provide better and more accurate insights.

The Canadian government has announced that it will provide funding for a federal open data exchange in an effort to support the commercialization of open data projects in the country. The government will spend up to $3 million for Communitech Corporation to establish the Open Data Exchange (ODX), which will be located in Waterloo, Ontario. “The creation of an open data institute in Waterloo will allow the project to leverage the extensive knowledge and resources already in the region, while benefiting the information communications technology cluster,” said Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board of Canada in a statement. The $3 million award will be given out over the course of three years. The project is expected to result in the incubation of 15 new data-driven companies.

Canada’s technology sector was in the spotlight today. Treasury Board president Tony Clement, Kitchener-Waterloo MP Peter Braid announced that the federal government will be contributing up to $3 million over three years to Communitech to develop the Open Data Exchange. The Open Data Exchange acts as a marketplace for data and will be based in Waterloo. This week, 59 members of Miami’s tech community signed a letter calling on Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez to introduce a robust open data policy for the county. The letter was sent on behalf of the signers by Code for Miami, a brigade of volunteers dedicated to improving civic technology throughout Miami­-Dade County. Miami lags behind when it comes to creating an open data policy. In the last few years, cities like San Francisco and Chicago have implemented strategic plans for releasing public data in a timely manner, improving the usability of city data and identifying innovative uses for data sets.

A new project focused on creating an open data marketplace could mean 370 new jobs, Treasury Board president Tony Clement said Tuesday in Waterloo. Clement was in town to announce $3 million in federal funding for the Open Data Exchange, a new initiative to be based in Waterloo. “We need to tap into the tremendous commercial opportunity represented by open data,” Clement told an audience at OpenText. “I really do believe that this is a real game-changer.” OpenText is one of the organizations partnering to create the exchange. Others include Communitech, Desire2Learn and the University of Waterloo. Those organizations are expected to contribute $3 million toward the project as well, with a further $50 million coming from venture capitalists or other sources.
